Side stand spring bolt broke
98 T:
I was on my way to the Blue Gray ride of 2009 and hooked the that bolt on a high bump while making a tight turn in a gas station and tore it right out along with the spring. Mad6Gun had a zip-tie and my bungie got me to ground zero where Chrome helped me out. Now I carry a spare 6mm bolt with .
But I still kept checking it every couple miles all the way to Ghettysburg... I was afraid of the kickstand would drop down and throw me off while making a tight left turn.
Thanks again, Adrian for the spare!! It's still working.

I found my side stand spring and the bolt broken under my bike. From what I read here, it supposed to be a nut who holds that little snuggler, guess what ? It is bolted into the side stand, so I have to take down the side stand support, drill through the broken bolt and make a new thread.
I've drilled with a 6 mm drill and after that with 6,4 mm, for a 8 mm thread. After that I take a 8mm by 60 mm bolt with 3 nuts, first nut to secure the spring, just next to the head, with 4-5 mm between them, after that I put the metalic plate that holds the sensor (beware at the position, you might have to do it couple of times) and another 2 nuts, one to secure the bolt after I screw it in and the second to secure the entire thing.
This thing took me a couple of hours, drilling, threading, measuring all staff, but in the end the final result is more reliable than that 6 mm thread.
This is the little pain in the ass :

Wow, blast from the past. 8)
Us mere mortals are not privy to the thought process of Mother Honda Engineers, but my guess would be they decided that spring bolt to be disposable and designed it to be the weaker link, hopefully saving any other damage.
I've broken a couple over the years, (decades :o) but have been able to remove the shank by using the nut at the top.
Sounds like yours absconded.

The issue is the square shoulder of the threaded end snaps when coming loose with mileage. Replacing with a regular bolt/nut stack up conversion (no shoulder) and because it appears to be 8mm? which is more than enough strength. Bolt selection, that's a personal choice though SS is not as tough as grade 8 but better than regular grade 5 bolts. Definitely seems to be a part that needs a regular looking at. I noticed the past two rides mine is starting get a little saggy.
Time to get down on the floor of the garage and clean it again while servicing. ;)

19 years and over 90K miles ago, that 'spring hook' bolt broke 300 miles from home. I rigged up a bungee cord to hold the stand up for the rest of the trip. I stopped at a Honda shop hoping they'd have one in stock. They didn't, but gave me a free bolt of the same size.
When I got home I slipped a piece of plastic tubing and two washers over the bolt. That created a groove for the spring. It worked just like the OEM part. I ordered a replacement, which sat on the shelf for over a decade. I finally used it when the same bolt broke on my other Valkyrie.
Here's a picture of the 19 year old fix. It may be more durable than the OEM part. All that grease isn't from a leak; it's from spraying lube on the side-stand pivot.
