I'm not saying its good or bad just giving my first impression. this truck requires (as an added expense to me) Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF. the first time I filled my DEF tank I noticed the nozzle is completely enclosed away from the environment. there is a sliding cover that seals it off. I opened the tank on my truck and noticed the aperture is very small, then I withdrew the nozzle and saw it was very small as well. the nozzle fit almost airtight into the tank I was wondering what the vapors were like and pulled the nozzle back an inch. wow!  Shocked that's nasty. I think we'll probably found out that this DEF is more harmful to the environment then the mercury in CFL's

I wonder what kind of hazmat clean up will be required when a truck crashes and ruptures the DEF tank?

the added expense is about .00815 cents per mile so it's not a big deal

Don't heat that stuff up, unless you love the smell of ammonia!     crazy2

Here is a Q&A sheet on it:

It is urea based ammonia (nitrogen) fertilizer, basically.  Of course, they had to have a fancy name for it!

I do believe gasoline fits that same category, we drag that stuff all over the place 5+ gallons at a time with our Valks .

DEF is stable no danger of big booom. but it is another mandate from washington and the math on it is worse than it is on ethanol or at least just as bad. It is suposed to reduce Nox emissions. But what about all the emissions it takes to make, bottle and transport the stuff to retailers?? Just more political BS tickedoff tickedoff

I'm kinda shocked at how indifferent I feel towards more regulations. must be inured to it now.

I've been selling it for over a year now. Ford dealer parts is where I work. It's been on the 2011 F series 6.7L diesel. The only real complaint I've heard from customers is that the DEF runs out sooner than the sales dept said it would. Surprise, Surprise!!  Grin Sales Dept lied!!  Grin A full tank of DEF is supposed to last from recommended oil change to oil change.
From what I hear all makes will have it in 2012.

Looks like we need to cross off Exhaust Fluid on our list of fake automotive stuff!   Grin

What's next?  Will they actually equip new vehicles with blinker fluid and muffler bearings?!   crazy2

There are a few more things that I have heard the price of the catalytic's for this and all the plumbing add about 7 grand to the price of the vehicle. Also the  new Ford tow truck that I think had this system on it had a bad habit of accelerating on its own like designed to do and stay there for a few minutes so that all the stuff in the exhaust could burn up.  The temp of the exhaust was so hot that I wonder if it could catch things on fire.

YES! I have an idiot light on my dash that signals 'hot exhaust'. there is a warning in the driver manual to keep flammable material away from the stack.
