I was trying to get my GPS hooked up, looking for the 2 loose wires to hook accessories in to under the right side cover, can't find them, Is it the 3 wires going in to the empty fuse socket along side of the rest of the fuses? One green-black and 2 green-red wires??? Than, now my neutral lite and tach lite quit working, must of pulled something loose while looking for the 2 loose wires??? I neen a quick fix, want to get headed to Maggie Valley, NC for the VOA reunion, should of been on the road by now, will have to forget about the trip if I can't get these 2 issues figured out quick, anyone have any idea??

For a Standard/Tourer (your profile pic doesn't look like an Interstate)

The accessory wires are green (ground) and light green with a red stripe: http://www.rattlebars.com/valkfaq/schematics/rpage02.html

Indicator lights: http://www.rattlebars.com/valkfaq/schematics/rpage07.html or http://www.rattlebars.com/valkfaq/schematics/rpage08.html ( depending on year)

Tach light: http://www.rattlebars.com/valkfaq/schematics/rpage03.html

you have to dig around to find the sleeve with the two accessory wires....one hot and one ground.  You haven't found it yet.  sometimes it is tucked behind or mingled with the harness.

That sleeve is usually a clear(ish) kind of bell shaped thing in there, over the two accessory wire ends.

i found out why my neutral-tach lite don't work, I lost that plug, must be a fuse that goes in that  fuse socket on the right of the rest of the fuses, anyone know what kind of fuse this is?

The fuse block cover should be labeled on the inside.

Luck was with me, found the 3 prong fuse or plug , now my neutral lite works again, will look for them wires a while longer, may end up hooking the GPS right to the battery, but need longer bolts to make room for the extra connecter on the screw.

As redflash posted, the accessory wires aren't hanging loose, they're in a plastic boot and you'll have to push or roll it back to see the wires and bullet connectors inside.  If it's never been accessed before look for it around the wire looms tied to the frame rail.

Ok, I cut the wire harness back as far as I could, no loose wires, I'm referring to the harness going to the fuse box on the left with all the fuses in, now, between the 2 fuse boxes, there is a rubber boot over where 2 big wires are hooked up, 1 goes to the positive on the battery and the other one goes to the alternater or whatever that round cylinder thing is, 2 allen screws hold them, could I hook in to these? Maybe I'm checking out the wrong wire harness, could it be the harness going tio the main fuse instead?

I found that the accessory wires didn't work, so using a circuit tester I looked around for something that was only hot with the key turned. I found a small 3 wire connector that didn't go anywhere and had a wire, the center hole, that fit the bill. Jammed a wire in and taped it up to trigger the relay to my secondary fuse block. I don't remember the color (and it's taped up pretty good, so I can't tell now), but if you use a tester I'm sure you'll find something that will work.

I would connect directly to the battery temporarily (with a fused wire) before I would cancel a ride over this. Just turn it off or disconnect it when the bike isn't running.

Couldn't I just splice the 2 GPS wires in to the plug I have for my battery tender, than it would be fused also??? Anyone there? I'd like to hit the road for Maggie Valley.

The slots on the right side of the fuse panel are for spare fuses.

Dude, you are scaring me.  It's obvious you don't anything about working with the electrical system of a motorcycle.  Find a local member that does.  If I can, I'll try and take a pic of the aux. connections on my '97 Tourer later today and post it.

Yes, you can splice into where the bettery tender goes if there's a fuse between it and the battery and it will work. Keep it simple! I'll see if I can get a pic for you RIGHT NOW!

Here's a picture from a similar thread of the accessory boot.  Thanks to vanagon40, the OP of this picture.

Note that the wires running into the accessory boot in this picture are white and green, which means the picture is likely from an Interstate.  If you've got a Standard or Tourer, yours should be light green with a red stripe and green.  Green is the ground, the other is the hot wire.

also, regarding using the battery tender connector...yes, that's not a bad place to tap into the battery for accessories.  On my wife's VTX I use it for her GPS power with a connector that matches the battery tender one (it's a trailer wiring plug if you look for one at RadioShack).  You can also find these plugs in the automotive section at most Walmarts.

For my Valk, I use this connector for my security alarm.  It's nice because it is a direct connection to the battery and already has an inline fuse on the tender pigtail.  I have an aux fuse block, but the alarm will drain the battery if the bike sits idle too long.  This way, when the bike is in winter storage, the alarm is disconnected.

Have a great trip and ride safe....

Well folks, i think I just chickened out, decided  against the Maggie Valley ride, my knee has been hurting and is getting worse, over 30 years with arthritis has taken its toll on me. That was my dream trip, too. I just don't want to ride that far all by myself, maybe someday soon I can maybe find someone else to head out that way with.

i hooked it up to the Aux wires, but when I turn the GPS on, with the key on, than turn the key off, it is still running, is this right? Also, does the thing keep charging when the bike is going down the road?

Most GPSes have an internal battery.  Except for my old 2730, all of mine have.  I had to push the power button and turn them off.  While you are riding the GPS will charge till it's battery is full then only draw the amount of power necessary for operation.

That may depend on the brand.  My Garmin lights up when I turn on the key and does a countdown to turnoff when I turn the key off.

Dude, I know about arthritis pain as well...but you're only 61 and shouldn't worry about making a trip alone. If I had someone to stay with my wife, I'd leave tomorrow for either California or Michigan....or both. I'd do it alone in a heartbeat.

As for the wiring problem for the GPS, you should have left it unhooked and had someone at the reunion help you. It's not  difficult, but if you don't know what you're doing you can sure mess up your bike wiring. If it were me, I'd still go. Sounds like you're Jones'en to make the trip.

It means a strong "hankering" or "desire".....among many other adjectives.

Just curious....where in SW Minnesota? I have family in Austin, but as a kid lived in NW Iowa and familiar with your general area.

"Glenh"  About those knees--My right one has already been "replaced" and now the left one has begun the same pain.  I'm 71 and have a long history of knee problems.  Recently I went to see my doctor about considering another replacement.  He suggested we try something a little less aggressive.  He gave (from his samples) some 200 mg CELEBREX capsules, saying to take one a day for a couple of days to see what happens.  By the morning of the third day the pain was GONE!  I stopped taking them after the third dose to see how long it lasted.  It took about a week and after a long day on my feet to bring back the pain.  Now-a-days, I take the Celebrx only when I need it and that's usually for only two days.             Ask your doctor about it!!
