Big props out to Handlebar Motorsports in Durango CO - they got us back on the road with a set of rear bearings on my 98 Standard. The talent of technician Rick, Tim working the service desk, and kindness of owners Tom and Karen (who gave us the use of their personal Goldwing for a run to Ouray while my ride was down) will always be appreciated. Thank you!

I thought it was brake pads at first, but a quick pull showed them to be fine. The play in the rear wheel explained the grinding noise. When the tech dismounted the wheel, the bearing came out in pieces. This was at about 52000 miles, and about 2000 miles since the wheel was off to have a new Avon mounted at my local (MN) dealer. Seems to me they should have spotted bearings out of cal at that time, but what are ya gonna do. Glad it didn't come apart while running Mt. Evans - that's a long way down.

Its good to know where good dealer mechanics are. I found my self in need in early May in Flagstaff AZ, the boys at Northland Motor Sports did an excelent job of finding me a U joint and drive shaft in Phoenix at Bobs Motorcycle junk yard. helped me rent a car to go pick up parts and stayed late to get me back on the road.

Durango is a great place.  Had a buddy that had Harley bike problems late last week.  They made time at the Harley shop to get him back on the road and back to Estelline Tx.  I was heading that way in the Pickup to get him home if need be.  As it was, I had a great time in Western Colorado...even though it was sans Valk......rats!!!   I can make ice cream...perhaps I can move up there and open an ice cream shop/ valk welcome station!!!!   BTW.....  +1 if you go to Silverton and eat at the Handlebars cafe/saloon!!!  Not bad in my opinion..

See ya

I am SO glad to see this post.  Over Memorial day, I had my left rear bearing fail on me while in London, ON.  Just like you, I thought it was brakes.  But...it wasn't and we had to tear my bike apart in Chrome's driveway.  We tried to get the bearing out but only got the inside out.  The race was stuck in there.  Had to wait until Saturday morning to visit the local honda dealer (Forest City Honda).  The counter guy there worked on the tire right there and got the race out...and best yet...he didn't charge me for his time...only the dust seal as I had the bearing already.  .

It is good to know where the really good dealers are located.

+1 on Handlebar Motorsports of Durango.  I had a rear go flat on me a few Labor Day Weekends ago.  It was a friday evening about 4:00 when I pulled into Handlebars.  I thought the weekend was shot as they were closing at 5:00 and until the following Tuesday.  They got me right in, new tire installed and out before 5:00.

How can you all be losing bearings?  One of the posters on here claims they never fail!
