Let me start with some abbreviated background. (some may remember) I rode my 97 Tourer to PA to ride to Maine with my Uncle on his Goldwing 2 years ago.  After the trip, a short time I get a call from my Uncle saying he bought a Standard with Trailer. He stated he was jealous of all the attention the Valk got on the trip and he felt like everyone saw him as just another “old fart” on a wing, so he added to his stable and planned on leaving the Valk to me in his will as he new I am a lifetime convert to these fine machines. Fast forward to his continued med issues and he said she’s just sitting there too much and he wanted me to come get her now and care for her properly. At this point let me say that My Uncle is the one person I LOVE to travel with and would ride ANYWHERE with him. It pains me that his pain is getting to the point that he isn’t riding practically at all and I’ve lost my FAVORITE riding partner. So I need help from you all to convince him to have the 2 surgeries he needs. The main one is a complete hip replacement as he has been bone on bone for sooo long the doc says he’s wearing into the bone. That’s the main surgery. The other is to correct the 2 degenerate dics and is not as long a recoup time. If he got on the ball I see us with many more rides together starting next season and would give up this bike and MUCH more to have that joy. He loves a Valk but has and loves his 1500 Wing also. He feels after letting the Valk go hhe would leave this board even though I encourage him to stay around.

What I need from you all is to help me in 2 ways: 1) Pressure him into the 2 surgeries that will give him relief and restore my best riding partner 2) Convince his stubborn butt that his LOVE for the Valk’s and stories of those that ride them is more then enough to keep him welcome around here. I’ll post another post with more pics from the journey home with my new love when I have time to sort it all out. For now I gotta get back into the work swing of things.

PS- The wife knows about my affair and supports it whole heartedly.  cooldude

Well now; that explains the vaguely disturbing narrative in the other thread. I almost quit reading it because it started to give me a woody. (...she shuddered gently in anticipation and gave a small sigh of pleasure as I ran my hand over her tank...yada-yada). The unsettling feelings of percieved inadequacy (...someone who, unlike me, will ride her long and hard and she likes it...). GAH!!!

Mountainman? Give your head a shake. Don't do something you will regret. I just went through some soul-searching with my Valk and lemme' tell ya - back to square one. Wing - Schming. (Valk - Schwinnnnnng!!) More on that later; being paged. But please rethink this!

Mountainman...I just buried a friend of mine last week, 57 years young...we don't have control over how long we live, but we do have control over how much life we live while we're alive...get your surgeries, get well and live your life!!!!  Can't imagine anything sadder in life than getting to a point where you really can't do anything and thinking about how much you could have done had you been proactive...leave this world with no regrets!!!!!

The hip surgery is a no brainer. I know several people who've had joint replacements and all say they'd do it again in a second.

The back surgery? Well I'm much more cautious from what I've seen. I used to work with a guy who had surgery for generating discs and the guy went from being in perpetual discomfort to perpetual pain and no longer being able to walk upright. Along with some other back surgery horror stories I've come to view back surgery as an absolute last resort. Losing weight, strength training and cortisone are routes I'd take first. If all were exhausted then and only then would I consider back surgery. Of course if you've already gone through every other avenue with no success then maybe it's time to go that route.

GET THE HIP SURGERY!  My dad had it done, what a miracle it was for him!  Do it NOW!

He has since passed on, but the surgery gave him several more years of productive life, not of pure pain.

1 Get the surgery. Wouldn't it be sad to say 5 yrs from now "I wish I'd had it"?
2 Stay here! Many people have traded bikes or are even bikeless and are still here.

Even if it doesn't get you back on the bike, get it done! Not riding will soon evolve into not walking, and a bike trumps a wheel chair hands down. The rest of your life, and the lives of those around you will be improved immensely.

And, hey, Missunderstood can't ride them BOTH, can he?

Mountainman,
My wife had the bone to bone hip wear for a number of years, the pain was so bad that she could barely walk.  Finally...had the hip surgery and whamo!!! new woman.

Not only are there new techniques out there that help you to avoid the recovery times of the past but you can be up and on your feet in a day or two......Don't believe me, ask your doctor....

And let me just share that in addition to hip issues my wife was suffering from arthritis and stenosis in her back.  The hip surgery actually helped eliminate that pain, most likely because it rated from the hip.  Are you listening???????????  If you enjoy riding and doing the things you loved before the pain you've got nothing to loose!  Do not give up!  There's a very good chance you could be saying, just months from now, What was I thinking?  LET'S RIDE!!!!

My father-in-law had his hip replaced a little over a year ago. He could hardly walk before. Now he is like new. Rides bicycle and was playing frisbee with us yesterday. Can't believe the difference. I would at least do the hip. It's probably affecting the back problem and that may improve too.

Mountain,

Can’t get this out of my head since Misunderstood shared what was going on.  Here’s the deal, I can certainly understand the issue if you’re hesitant because of the physical pain that you’ve been suffering.  Your brain in tough cases says forget it buddy you aint goi’n there.  And the more you suffer the more the nog’n says I don’t care what it takes…no more, it wears on you to the point of depression.  The drugs they give can at times provide relief but what they don’t tell you is that in addition to numbing that pain they’re numbing your mind, also serving to depress.

I can’t guarantee if you have the surgery that all is going to be well, but here’s the deal, “Don’t Ever Give Up” while there’s a chance for normalcy or something close to it.  Don’t let this situation continue to numb you mind…these operation can and do work.  It can give you the relief you need.  Re-think you position about giving up things you love and make them the reason you have to fight.  After all, what’s life other than one trial after the next.  Don’t let the pain, drugs, or the depression beat you while you’ve still got the chance to change all that.

Look …I know it easier said than done but that’s what makes something worth doing…..to walk and “RIDE” without pain, think about it …the surgery is giving you that option, if that doctor is not convincing you of that you’ve got the wrong one.  Start with the hip replacement and see where it takes you…it again may be enough to alleviate the back pain.  DO NOT GIVE UP!  You can do this, beside “Flat Lander” doesn’t have the same ring to it….”Couch Potato” maybe  Shocked  Grin   But “Mountainman”, ah, yes, must be a good reason you called yourself that!  Sounds good to me!

God Bless and Be with you.  And He is whether you or …. some of these other numbskulls  uglystupid2 believe it.

Sincerely, Bob

The hip surgery is a "NO BRAINER", it will NOT get better on its own.

And the discomfort of the surgery will be far outweighed by the end results.

Ask around and find out who the best orthopedic surgeon in your area is for hip replacements and GIT ER DONE.

I can understand being more cautious about the back surgery, but if it is necessary, it is necessary.

If it helps my wife works for one of the best neurosurgeons in Virginia..... it ain't exactly next door to you but I trust his oppinion and skills completely.

If you would like to consult him send me a PM and I'll forward his info to you.
