I have an '01 Interstate and have been running Dunlop Elite 3's for the last 5 years with good mileage.  Has anyone had any experience running the Bridgestone Exedra G702 on the rear of a Valkyrie?  If so, what did you think of it.  The reviews I have read range from average mileage to great mileage on the rear.  Some reviews indicate it is not very good on wet roads.  I can get a great deal on this tire but do not want to sacrifice handling or mileage.  All comments welcome.  I have a Bridgestone Exedra on the front and have been running it for 2 years and it performs well.  Thanks in advance.

I am planning on going to the Bridgestone tire on my next change.  SO I am interested in hearing the results as well.

Bridgestone has recently developed a new tire, called Exedra Max.  From the info I've read, its supposed to be an improvement over the "regular" Exedra.  I'm planning on trying a set when I change tires.

The president of the socal chapter (BigMac) is running them and likes them very much.  He was on Elite 3s before.  You might ping the socal board; he responds all the time.  I'm up for 2 tires right now and he's suggesting them, but I pride myself on being a 'late adopter' instead of an early adopter.  I love the E3s and won't change til everyone else does.  But then I still have a rotary phone in my family room. I asked the Bridgestone MC representitive about Excedra, Max, and a Z rated tire they sell.   This is what he sent to me:

Hi Pluggy,

The first recommendation would be the R702 which is the true matching tire for the R701 front and is also the tire approved by Honda for the Valkyrie...

In going to the Exedra Max you are going to a V rated tire (this would be the second recommendation) and the G850 is Z rated for performance cruisers,  we definitely don't recommend the G850 for this application.

Regards,
Kevin Hunley
Customer Service/PDIC Manager

And, more info, too:

Pluggy,

I don't have any first hand knowledge of how the Exedra Max works on the Valkyrie and we don't have the front in the Exedra Max for this bike.

The 701 & 702 have been available and used on this application for years and I don't think I've had any complaints (people always want more mileage) and some GL1800 owners run the 702 rear on their bikes saying it corrects the speedometer.

Regards,
Kevin Hunley

I found his advice sensible, and I'm going with the 701 and 702.

I'll let you know as soon as I got my Exedra 702 (should be at my door on Monday ). Heard some positive comments on handling and durability from GW riders so thought to try it myself. Besides I'm getting a bit tired my ME880's ending up looking like this in a hair under 8000 miles....  Undecided

The factory installed tires for 2001-2003 or 2004 GL1800's was the Bridgestone Exedra G704 for the rear and G709 for the front.  After that, Honda went with Dunlops.  My 2002 GL1800 was delivered new with the Bridgestones and that's all I've ever installed on it.  Don't know anything about the 702.  As far as the G704 and G709 on my GL1800, don't have a single complaint....they have excellent grip.....wet or dry, I get around 13,000-14,000 miles on each set of tires, and none of my Bridgestones make any noise as some say the Dunlops do.  That's why I plan to install the Bridgestone Exedra Max on my Tourer when the time comes....I've had a good track record with Bridgestones and expect the tires to perform as well on my Tourer as they have on my GL1800.

To be honest, the BridgeStone would not be my first choice of tyre for the Valk.
I ride a Standard, which has detatchable Givi top and side boxes which we use when we go on holidays/touring.
My last rear tyre was a BridgeStone Exedra G702. It was totally banjaxed with only 4,800 miles ran on it! Pathetic mileage, and it did not inspire confidence in the wet.
I am not a 'hard rider'. On highways cruising around 60 - 65 mph. (My lady isn't comfortable with high speed, so I keep it down for her)
The rear tyre I had before the 'Stone was a Venom 'R'. I clocked 11,700 on that before it had to be changed.
At the moment, I am trying the DarkSide. I've only put up 700 or so miles on the CT and I'm still trying to make up my mind if I can live with the differences or not.

I bought our '97 Std. in December (deposit, anyway), and started riding it in January. It came with a set of Exedra's that looked almost new. I've put just over 6000 miles on her since then, and they've done pretty well so far. The rear is getting a bit of a flat spot in the center from wear, but the front looks very good (I run them just over 40 psi...that may affect the wear). They seem to handle pretty well (although I don't have a reference for any other tire on this bike yet), however they don't seem to be as stable in cornering as I'd like, so I'm going to order Avon Cobra's next week to replace these for a 2700 mile trip in October. I'll post impressions after the trip.

Just ordered an Excedra Max for the rear.  Will let everyone know how it goes.  Planning on doing the Trail of Tears ride all the way to OK next month.  It will be my 13th consecutive year of riding at least the Chattanooga to Florence AL portion of the ride.  Rode out to OK 5 years ago so I figured it was time to do it again.

I have BS front and rear and love them. I have an excedra on front and a 200 battleaxe on the rear. She handles great and sticks good. I have 7k on them and very little signs of wear. I read a lot of reviews before i bought mine and some were getting over 15k and I believe it. I run 40 psi front and rear. Wink

I'm about to change my third rear Exedra in 4 years. I usually get about 11-12,000 from the rear and 15k from a front. Florida has mostly flat roads and isn't the place with lots of curves, so I run lower tire pressures than other folks or I'd wear the center out of the tire first. I rode GL 1200 Goldwings for years and tried many other brands; settled on Metzlers until I had a rear chunk the tread and de-laminate while on a trip. Had to replace it with a Dunlop, then sold the bike. Bridgestones aren't the most popular brand with most of the membership here, but for cost vs. mileage, it works pretty well.

OK have had the Exedra on the bike for a few days now so just a few first impressions: feels very good, banks nicely ( well it's a new tire ) and overall  grip feels good thus far. Have not really had a chance to ride it wet yet as we have not had really all that much rain in North Texas lately  Roll Eyes

Just a hundred miles or so, not really conlcusive anything but first impression overall good  cooldude

Oh yes, and at 43 PSI

Well

Mother Nature provided me a surprise opportunity to try the tire out in rain thins morning ( yes, my jeans are just about to dry up after a few hours, thanks for asking ) and it did not feel too bad in the rain. Obviously I was not pushing too hard as it really was pouring down for a little while, but wet traction felt pretty good. Actually based on my butt instinct, I would already rely this tire more than the E III that I had previously, in the rain especially.

Bearing in mind of course that my butt is a highly subjective measuring instrument  Cool

Sigrun, that looks to be a stock size ME880. Big mistake on the Valks. Until I went with a c/t, I used the Metz ME880 in a 200/60-16 in back, running 42lbs. psi and never had it down to the threads.  In the two that I didn't tear up with something I picked up on the road, I got 12k miles. Two had well under 5k when a large puncture destroyed it so I don't count those. I've seen a number of riders change from the stock 180 size to the 200 and nearly doubled their mileage. I still run an ME880 in front with the c/t, this one is fairly new but it replaced one with 16k on it.

I've tried them all, including the BS you speak of.  Don't see much difference in any of them, except I did wear out the Metz pretty fast, but that was probly my fault.  It was the first replacement I tried, and I used to do a lot of burnouts when I first got my Valk.  Hoser  Grin

Well well well....

Thanks for the tip John, I was not thinking of that. Yes, it's bone stock ME880 180/70-16 and like it's predecessor did not last very long. Once this 702 is done for, I might as well try 200 to see about them apples. Did the size change make any difference on the cupping of ME880 as well?

I never had a problem with cupping either front of rear. I ride solo and kept them at 40/42psi, front/rear. They are a softer compound so if you're a hard rider your mileage won't be as high as my 12k average. But overall, the only time I noticed it was time to change was around 11-12k the rear started to gator back down the center. Still rode ok, just a bit noisy in the curves when it rolled off the center.

One additional item....the Metz are known for sticking good, especially in the rain.

Bought my bike, with right at 1000 miles on the 702. Stupid, stupid me, checked EVERYthing on the bike, except the air pressures!!! Did I mention stupid??

50 miles later, it was junk, cupped beyond recognition. Surprisingly, it rode rather well, even with just under 20 psi. It WAS all straight-line though.

Yeah, pretty stupid...

I rode it another 300 miles or so, correct pressure, waiting to get the new C/T on it.

Don't know how I did that - probably the most stupid thing, I've EVER done on/with/over a bike...

Can't blame ANY of it on the tire.

Update:

Still like the tire after about 1000 miles or so. As a matter of fact like it so much that I just ordered a 701 for the front to accompany it from AMT. My front ME880 is down to the wear markers already and a couple of rides coming up.....

Well then

About time for an update. The last time I posted on this, I was still deliriously happy with the tire.... and for the most part that still held until the bitter end... but. The cupping on the tire really got worse towards the end of it. The mileage, well, I really cannot say since I did not really get all out of it. One day coming home from work I noticed that the rear end felt a bit mushy. As soon as I got home I checked the rear pressure, and  there was barely 20 psi in there  Embarrassed

Seemed I had had a very slow lealking puncture for a few hundred miles or so, not bothered to check the air pressure often enough and the tire had worn all the way to the markers in less than 5000 miles on the odo. Cannot blame this to the tire though, I should have been more vigilant with the pressure gauge.....

Yes, I did learn my lesson there.... Sigrún Valkyrie is now sporting a brand spanking new TPMS from Orange Electronics.

So. All in all not an unpleasant tire in riding characteristics. Cupping definitely a problem at least  with my riding style and even though I screwed up with the tire at the end.... I still got  a feeling that the mileage would not have been that impressive after all. So, now there's an Avon Cobra in the rear and looking forward to have many many miles on the road with that one.

The prices I listed were from the end of February. I'm not sure why the front tire was so cheap at the time. It wasn't even a sale price. Both tires for $236.00 I couldn't pass 'em up!!!!

Well I called D/K and asked about the fact that the tires are changing prices, even different than the prices I quoted in my last post above from a few days ago. The story is the prices can change DAILY according to the sale agent (no sympathy) on the phone. O'well guess I'll wait....
