Author Topic: Smoked my blower pulleys.  (Read 1456 times)

We got back from our trip north. My blower belt started slipping now and then while we were in the Blue Ridge mountains. But by the time we got home it was slipping bad. I figured it would be OK till we got home. Wrong. The top pulley and the idler pulley is smoked. Crap. Luckily I have a box full of old pulleys from the 5 psi boost days. Magnacharger sent me some pulleys when I was doing installs. All 5 # pulleys. I'll have to chuck one up in my "new" 1947 Southbend and turn it down to a 12# pulley.

It's always something... tickedoff

No, they are micro V. And judging from the spare pulleys... there aren't two that are the same, high quality???. I looked up the specs, It shouldn't be too hard to make one.
The old old gen I blowers have cogged belts, but I believe they did away with them to prevent blowing the blower off of the manifold in the event of a "burp", since there is no pop off valve.

There is enough 'meat' on those pulleys to be able to 'shrink' them that much ??  Oh, I can't find the can of the stuff I used to 'fix' the Mooney struts, I either threw it away or gave it to someone, so I still can't tell you the name of it..

Yeah the 5# pulleys are about 2.75 OD and the 10# pulleys are about 2.48

Jeff, as I'm new to this blower stuff, what happened? bad bearings? tensioner? I bought spookshow's Valk and I've got a lot to learn.

If I had re tightened the belt when it started squealing everything would have been fine. But is got progressively worse during our trip.
The moral to the story is... don't let your belt slip for a thousand miles....

WooHoo, Jeff! Nice lathe!!!

I'm working on my 1937 10F Atlas, would like to be able to justify a nice Southbend, but just haven't yet. I did a LOT of work on a 40's era Southbend, maybe 50's, in the late 70's, and that thing was solid as a rock! I actually used  it to build repair pieces, for other lathes, and mills!

I love making chips - wish I knew what I was doing!!

Yeah, I'm a hack on a lathe and a mill but I can usually accomplish what I need to do. I picked up the SB cheap, $600, and tore it all down and refurbished it. It's in good shape now.
