I guess an explanation of "air induction system" would be helpful.

The vacuum lines incorrectly installed can also be the cause sometimes of some problem you report.

Is the bike a California bike?

If an "air induction system" involves modifiying the air cleaner box, it is a bad Idea.  Hoser

No the bike is in Northern Michigan. Yes he removed the air cleaner box. The air induction is made of two tubes with foam air cleaner in each one. He has hooked all the vac. lines back up to the induction tubes. He has changed the springs on the slides. He just took it for a test ride down our rode after changing the springs and it still is beaking up. There is black smoke coming out of the pipes Undecided

Black smoke sounds like it's running rich...very rich. One thing to keep in mind re. the airbox; after all the experiments members have done with the OEM airbox, few...if any, have been able to improve on the factory unit. It is well engineered right from the factory, something most all new ventures have discovered. Put it back on and quit messing with it.

Yes, I can't add any greater positive endorsement than that of John Schmidt.

I guess your friend didn't do any reading about that specific subject (air box modifications) before doing what he did.

At least Pinwall has a bunch of stock air boxes for sale and they are plenty cheap.

Can't short the guy for trying!

Yep to what John said.. Honda got this monster right, including the air box.. If you want some shiny chrome thingys sticking out the side, add some velocity stacks.. When you were asked about the bike being a California model, that concerned emission devices..

The black smoke doesn't add up, modifying the air intake system would lean out the bike would it not? Unless the new (design) was starving the motor for air????

I've got to say, I thought I had heard it all. Where the heck did he come up with an "air induction" for a valk?
And if he changed the diaphragm springs it could be running rich from that, but we don't have anywhere near the information we would need.

All I can say is that it is going to take a bunch of retuning to get it back in tune. My guess would be days or weeks of jetting and needle work.

But, that is the price for looking "cool". Wink

Come to think of it... where would you even get different springs? Ace Hardware? Undecided

I got mine from hdlparts.  I put I/S carb springs in my Tourer.
