I'm planning to change the oil in my recently acquired Valk and go with synthetic. I did this in my Goldwing many years ago, and everything went well. How long should I run the first batch of synthetic, since it will have some contamination with residual oil?

If you drain the oil while nice and hot and drain it completely then you don't need to sweat the residual oil. Synthetic and conventional oils (which are almost all blends now anyway) are compatible. I made the switch to synthetic too and went 5000 miles before the next change. My engine did not asplode.

Don't worry about it, drain the old stuff and put in the new stuff and ride it.  Just make sure the new stuff don't say energy conserving on the rating label.  Hoser
