I just listed my '98 Tourer on the Classifieds tonight.
After my knee replacement three weeks ago, I came out of the hospital with a staph infection. If left untreated, it could take up residence in the new knee and require that it be removed. So, I have an antibiotic to take twice a day that I have to take for six weeks.
Here's the hangup - after the insurance kicks in its pittance, I write a check to the local drug store for $1,391.78 a week for six weeks, for a grand total of $8,350.68. Gotta raise the dough somehow, so the Valk, the travel trailer and my John Deere tractor are all for sale.

Hate it when life interferes with life. You can get another bike later. You will need the knee to ride it. Best of luck, Fred.

my husband is going thru that right now. Had knee replacement in Jan. didn't find the staph till July had to remove the knee. Will be on vancomycin till Oct. he was taking it every 12 hrs, now it's down to every 18 hrs. Has to be off of the antibiotic for 2 weeks to see if the staph is still there. Will open the knee and take a sample, if there is no staph new knee. I don't see why the insurance doesn't pay for it. He takes his intravenously and has a nurse come out 2 times a week to check his antibiotic level. we haven't paid anything., Hope all goes well heal quick.

You could always come up north and rob a bank in Charlestown. It happens so often they might not even notice and they'd never suspect an out-of-towner.
Sorry to hear about having to sell your bike though. I went bikeless for a while when I was in A&P school and it sucks.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. A friend had to have his "new" knee pulled out due to infection and it ended up being a year long ordeal. His knee is fine now, but I think he is addicted to pain killers. I just hit 6 months post new knee and all is well. Hang in there, do your therapy and good luck!

You need to have a discussion with the surgery room operators. Staph infections are the result of poor sterile procedures. They have a responsibility to you for the failure on there part.
Good luck with the knee. I hope you do not end up having to pay for the medicine.

Bama Red would you please contact me thru e-mail . My daughter lives in Nashville and is involved with a discount prescription . It could not hurt to check with her . If it helps lower your cost, it could be worth the time. The card is free to you. no scam. I just lost all my insurance and the prescription cost to me is $6.00 more than it was with insurance. da prez rossokwdhlls@comcast.net

Nothing to be scared about, just make sure you have everything checked out before surgery. We had a second opinion done. The second dr found it. One thing he did mention is to have your teeth checked before surgery. Dr said he wasn't going to replace the knee till he got an OK from the dentist. He went and found out it had bacteria on one tooth and peridontal decease. Teeth never bother him. Make sure you don't have any cuts and scrapes. Never hurst to be overly cautious, especially if your the outdoor kinda of guy. It's a tuff road, but at the end is worth it.

If you lived in Canada or England (or most any other civilized country), you wouldn't have to sell your bike because of medical problems. People shouldn't be forced into selling off all of their ppossessions or forced into bankruptcy simply because they get sick.

Bama: Depending on your family income at this point, I could possbly put you in a program that would charge $20/prescription/month. 'Pre-existing' is a non-issue. I represent Insphere Insurance Solutions, which has a national membership Alliance for Affordable Services. That membership is $28/month for individual, $40/month to cover whole family. Therefore, if get the family membership, total monthly cost is $40 plus $20 for each Rx Email me if you want to find out more, if you qualify, etc. Don't want to make this an 'advertisement', but if I can help........ jhall@insphereis.com7-year VRCC member

Damnation man. When things went to $hit in Illinois in the early 70s they wanted me to sell everything BEFORE they would help me. Thanks to the V A i did not have to sell everything. Red hope you get better and get this lined out soonest. Your just gonna be between bikes fer a bit. You have a couple offers of help here. My brother (da prez) means it when he offers something. He ain't blowing smoke. There has got to be a program or two to help you thru this rough spot. Check it all out BEFORE you sell stuff. And yes-keep us infirmed man-yer family. RIDE SAFE-HOPEFULLY.

No one has mentioned it but if you came home from the hospital with the infection, you might want to be putting in a medical malpractice suit..hospital's and their staff are supposed to take steps to prevent that from happening...my wife (ex nurse in the OR suggested this)

Catfish - my ins. has no provision for home health care. I would either have to go into a hospital each day and get it IV, or take the oral medication that I'm taking. The nearest hospital is 60 miles round trip and my co-pay there would be $100.00-200.00/day. By taking the pills, at least I can file as a prescription med and get some of it back.

Wasn't gonna get all technical, but here goes... The bacteria is a staph epi - it lives on skin - mine, yours, the docs and nurses all have it, and in its natural habitat it is relatively benign. When it gets into an open wound, however, all bets are off. It is easily treated - they target the staph epi with an antibiotic that is especially built to go after this bacteria. All this specificity has a cost, though, since the antibiotic generally only works for maybe 3-4 different bacteria. Also, in time, the bacteria become resistant to the antibiotic and a new one must be engineered that will combat the new, resistant bacteria. Complicated, huh? olddog1946 - I'm not a litigious person by nature. I still believe in accidents and don't automatically believe that someone is "at fault" whenever something goes wrong. Just my nature and upbringing, I guess. hogg - I have already checked into Patient Assistance programs with the drug companies. Even though I am retired, my income is too high for any help from them. DDt - don't worry, I'm not going anywhere! I plan on buying Smokin' Joe's Interstate in 5-6 months, when this is all straightened out! blackrams - Can't post the John Deere or the travel trailer in our classifieds - not motorcycle/Valkyrie related. da prez - I will be sending you an e-mail. To all the rest of ya - thanks for the good thoughts and prayers.
