I just got 2 rebuild kits from old bike barn. They were half what hdl wanted. They also were very prompt.but,2 rubber diaphragms and a spring, thats it?I guess you use your stock bolts, use any orings or washers you already have and replace the 2 diaphragms.they didnt come with a filter.I intend changing the air cleaner and while the tank was off i was going to change/rebuild the petcock.i hear the diaphragm was the usual problem with the petcock and gas mileage would be one evidence of that.my bike is a 98 tourer with 26,000 miles, but the petcock is presumably 13 years old.I just thought there would be more to it.Since there isnt, most likely even i can do it.

That's about all there is in the kit.  Just make a mental note when you take it apart as to which orientation the parts go back. Don't ask  uglystupid2

Useful instructions here: http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/petcock.htm

Pictures of a bad diaghram here: http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,21958.0.html

If your problem is a bad diagphram, I suspect it won't look quite as bad as yours hasn't stranded you yet.  Mine did.

Hey, DM, did you get a new Screen Set, too?  If not, I highly recommend you not pull the screen out of your tank (on top of the petcock) until next time (like soon).  They can be difficult to remove, and unless you have a new one to go back with, well, don't ask.   Lips Sealed

install a snubber in the vacuum line and it will take a long time to wear out.

i don't know what's  going on.I started posting here originally becausemy gas milege was so bad.24.4.i gotthe advice to repir the petcock and replace the air filter.I ordered 2 repair kits since 1 doesnt meet minimum order amount for OBB.I have been filling up about every 2 days because i have been intentionally riding a lot to get the bike some highway miles.I just 2 days ago got a new rear tire.My last 2 tanks were yesterday 32.2 and today 37.7.I aint going to take anything off my bike and mess with it with good mileage like that.reasons for improvement are likely
1.more sustained highway driving
2.milder temperatures
3.new round and properly inflated rear tire
4.less frequent jackrabbit starts

I expect my average now to be about 32 which i understand is about average for these bikes.i can live with that.

2.milder temperatures
3.new round and properly inflated rear tire
4.less frequent jackrabbit starts

1.  will always increase mpg over stop and go
2.  colder air temps actually lower mpg, air is denser, more drag to move through and longer for oil to get to thinner op temp.
3.  correct air pressure increases mpg, new tire will get less mpg than one with less tread depth
4.  7k hole shots will always lower mpg.

Great news that your mileage is improving, but it's not quite time to stop.  It may have been covered in a previous thread, but I don't remember specifically.  Do you or BeeSharp know when the last petcock rebuild was?  If the answer is yes, when was it?  If the answer is no, there is reason enough right there to put 30 bux worth of petcock & screen parts into a 13 year old Valkyrie.

Since you have the kits, bring 'em to the next wrench party and those of us who have done the rebuild/refurb of the petcock can assist.  It's a good thing to do in a purely preventative maintenance sort of way.

Do you or BeeSharp know when the last petcock rebuild was?

I'm nearly positive my neighbor never rebuilt the petcock. I remember helping him test it with vacuum and it was working properly a couple years ago. Also, my neighbor-PO is not very PC savvy so I typically order parts for him.

After having my issue with a faulty petcock on the Hill Country trip last year I would rebuild the petcock at a WP or "winter" maintenance.

It's easy to replace that vaccuum hose.  It goes from the petcock down to the nipple on carb #6, rear left side.  Just don't make it too long that it kinks.  Don't ask how I know...  Cheesy
