Two words to live by.......Double tap. BF, you need to brush up on your zombie stoppin skills. Head shots only. Marty Double tap in the head. Anyone here read the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks? It's a pretty cool little book, though I take exception to his preference for the AK over the AR platform. The author has a less than thorough understanding of the tremendous damage that small, hyper-velocity rounds can cause. If I want to penetrate light cover then I'll take the AK, but since accuracy is important in dealing with zombies (much more so than being able to shoot them through drywall) then the AR is the better platform. |

Learned everything I need to know about Zombie killin' from my all time favorite Zombie movies...... 28 Days Later 28 Weeks later Zombieland (the Zombie killin' technique double tap worked like a charm in this movie) Resident Evil (every Resident Evil film ever produced) Dawn Of The Dead (the best beginning to a Zombie movie....ever) And last, but not least..... I am more than ready. These are my tools. And anvil, I think the reason Mr Brooks mentioned the AK was the better reliability of the more simple platform. I have both and I think the AK would have an advantage in sustained zombie killing. It's just a more robust design with fewer parts. Of course, my AR can hit them out to 500 yards or more, but the only dangerous zombie is the close zombie!  |

Get the reliability vs. maintenance aspect but the AK really isn't any more reliable than a well made and properly maintained AR though. The author also mentions the larger caliber 7.62mm as being more effective but it's really not. In fact, the Russians were so impressed with the effectiveness of the small caliber hyper-velocity projectile (and the loadout advantages) that they decided to try their own and the 5.45mm AK74 was born and is a favorite of Russian special forces. I just think he based his opinion on a lot of apocryphal info (the 5.56 is underpowered and the AR is inherently unreliable). But I envision having to protect yourself in a multitude of circumstances and the most preferable one being to preemptively engage zombies at long range seeing as they're all "bitey" up close. The AR in a carbine form can do CQB AND distance takedowns. When things get really up close and personal you whip out your boom-stick and remember to save the last one for yourself. Oh, and my other preparation would be to get really good with a Katana. |

Or any sword, for that matter. I prefer a two-handed sword, but a machete is all fine for zombies, too.
As far as the AK, I just like the fact that it can sit in mud all day and still fire. Precision is NOT a word to use for a standard AK, but it's that trait that makes it able to resist jams when faced with dirt and crud.
As far as caliber, a .22 to the head and a zombie is just as dead!
The AR does have less muzzle climb, though, due to the "straightness" of the design.
