So. . . who needs .223 ammo? [/color] *Raises his hand* (But the shipping would be hideous) But I know what you mean, I've dug through my ammo stash and occasionally find calibers I don't own and never have owned, and have no recollection of buying or acquiring. (.25 ACP is the main one, I've never even had the desire to own a centerfire less powerful than a .22LR, but somehow I've got some boxes of .25 ACP ammo... Who knows...)

When I dpnated my M1 Garand to the KWVA I had about 400 rounds of ball ammo in 30-06.
I was lucky to be able to sell it to a member of our local club at a little more than my costs.
Sanctioned M1 matches still exist, probably will for awhile.

There was a Government program called the Civilian Marksmanship Program which ‘donated’ surplus military ammo with the understanding it would be used strictly for educational/training. So, our local Gun Club used to have “30.06 shoots” every spring with pickup truck full ammo they got from the army. Anyone could bring out their 30.06 and fire off a bunch. The last time we went was in the early 80's, so I don’t know if the program is still running. I’m guessing the ‘Obama’s’ ended it?

CMP still exists. There still are M1's and a few carbines available. However, the ammo is no longer free but not bad prices as of two years ago.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I have a Colt 1908 vest pocket. It was the only thing my father got from his father, and passed on to me. A thorough cleaning and all new springs made it work like new.... except the thumb safety tends to go up and down on it's own. It is a collector not a carry piece. Truth is, the .25 acp is somewhat more powerful than a .22LR, it's just that the ballistic tables are created from 2" bbls for .25 acp..... no longer were made in any gun, and the .22 tables from much longer bbls, at least 6", or even rifle bbls. Like a miniature 1911.

Funny story, Ted Kennedy tried to shut done camp perry back in 2000s. What he didn't understand was camp perry is a state post. I live a couple hours from perry and visit it every year during the nationals. I use to compete, but when I was called up in '04 I had to stop for 5 years due to service. Love those M1s! During the nationals they have a garand match. If you shoot you can get a loaner from the CMP and if you like it buy it.
