You folks are great!  You saved me a lot of hate and discontent for sure!

So My lady needs new slippers and while I had the rear wheel off I pulled the drive case off to look at the drive shaft.  I never would have thought about this if it had not been for all the talk about it in "shop talk" and on this tech forum.  I mean, come on, my lady only has 25K on her.  She's hardly broke in yet!  Well, the shaft is shot and so is the pinion cup.    Sad  They look so bad, I believe I might have been just one twist on the throttle from walkin.

Thanks guys.  Now looking for a replacement shaft and pinion cup.  Anybody have any good ideas?

Thanks Skinhead.  The parts have been ordered.  Guess I will be spending another week (or more) with my Valk torn apart.

Can you post some pics of it? Is it rusted? No lube? How is the seal? Dare I ask about the holes at the bottom of the pinion cup. uglystupid2 Just trying to figure how this happens. No grease from the factory or was it worked on before and reassembled dry? Or did the seal go bad or was not in the proper place and allow water in?

I tried to post pics but I must have been doing something wrong because they would not post.  However, the shaft and cup look a lot like the pics Tropic traveler posted.  The seal was a mess.  The spring had worn thru the seal lip and the whole cup was completely dry and full of rust.  This is my first time with the wheel off and I suspect that someone before me had opened this up and torn the seal by improper reassembly.  I have not cleaned the cup nor have I removed it yet.  Gonna wait for my new parts before I take the cup off.  I am going to go ahead and pull the yoke and inspect it since I am not going to be going anywhere for a while anyway.

I am just happy I found this before I got stranded miles from home.

I have a photobucket account and just copy and paste the image code to post pics. I'm sure there are other ways but that works for me.

Here is a question that keeps rolling around in my head.  (Not to make this about the holes again) If the seal went bad and allowed water into the pinion cup to cause the rust, and the holes are open to the rear housing then isn't the rear now full of water also?? Has anyone, after having this rust issue, drained the rear and what did you find?
