I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but Crankyape.com is a decent place to look for some bikes that may be of interest..lots of them are wrecked bikes, others are repo's and some are even brand new. Can be bought for a lot less than retail..there is currently a Suzuki Burgmann 400 on there that might be the ticket..

Lots have said it beofer me, but I will reiterate: Don't start a beginner with anything bigger than a 750cc.  The starter cruisers from Yamaha and Honda are really the way to go.  The V-Star 650 is a solid bike that will be dependable when she needs it and (for a while at least) thrilling when she wants it. Also, those bikes are freakin' bulletproof!
