I don't know if it's you (other VRCC members) or me, but it seems that the spelling on this message board is getting worse.  As with any message board, the writing here runs the gamut from quite good to downright awful, but some of you make me wonder if you are drunk as you compose your messages.  Please do everyone who wants to read your writing a favour and at least add a spell-checker to your web browser.  The one I use for Internet Explorer 9 is Speckie (http://www.speckie.com/home/), which puts a squiggly red line under misspelled words.  I know spelling is just one aspect of good writing and we're very informal here, but it's the least you can do since you're using a computer of some type to post here anyway.  Everyone who posts here is doing so because they want to communicate something, but poor writing and spelling distracts from your message, just like how poor singing can make you plug your ears for a song with a good message.

Spell check works fine when you're typin' drunk.  cooldude  ,but the spell "givadamn" is what's broken!

Is there a punctuation checker?  Or a keyboard made for my fat fingers that will speed up my hunt and peck typing style?

Sorry Al, just had to rub it in a bit. And you're(not "your") right, the spelling and other aspects of writing learned in grade school has become quite bad in many cases. But, I just overlook it and can usually read right through it and understand what they're (not "there") talking about.  Evil

Sellping is not ipmortnat as lnog as all the ltteres are in the wrod.

The mnid lokos at the wohle wrod and not ecah letter.

As lnog as all the letters are terhe, the mnid will decipher it and wa la you have a intelligible wrod.

Of course the first and last leettrs have to be in the Right Place as well.

Only 70% of you will be able to view this and read this.

Because 30% of us do not have that ability.

I suspect the author of this thread is one of those in the 30 percentile.

Incorrect spelling is also one of my sore spots....although I occasionally make a
tiny mistake or two. I figure as long as the point gets across without too much
cipherin' and figgerin' it ain't too bad.

I spent some 40 years chasing grammar, spelling, punctuation and tense perfection.

Now I'm retired and hack away on a dozen forums daily and don't give a good damn about all that, so long as I can get my point across.  I actually know how to spell much better than I know how to type, but there are a dozen or more words I will misspell and mistype forever.

He offered his honor.
She honored his offer.
And all night long,
he was honor and offer.

A spell checker wouldn't work very well.. It wouldn't find mistakes with soundalike words.

Road, rode, brake, break, lightening, lightning, coming, comming (spell checker says comming is not a word).  Then there are regional and national differences like tyres, tires, truck, lorry, battery, accumulator, tote, carry, pop, soda, on and on.  The English language is interesting.

No matter, it don't make no difference to me (double negative) i can understand what 's being said.

It's also interesting that everyone here can spell VALKYRIE which is more than the average person can do.

Like I sed, I can unnerstand wats sed here. Just kep in mine the one rule noted here.  A preposition is not a word to end a sentence with.

Now a proposition is an entirely different thing, they tell me Grin

Spelling correctly doesn't make you more intelligent, but consistent spelling errors do make you appear ignorant.  Please carefully note that I didn't say it makes you ignorant or that it shows how ignorant you are.  I said it causes you to appear ignorant.

For those of us with the broken giveashitter, I'm okay with that.  If you truly don't care whether others think you ignorant then carry on.  It follows that you also don't care whether readers take your words seriously and that's cool if you're posting into a "good time" thread.

On the other hand, if you're abusing the public forum espousing your views on politics, religion, or cultural values with the apparent intent of convincing someone else, or ridiculing someone else's position and you do that with a broken giveashitter, you have a conflict operating.

Like Tom, I've not met up to 99% of the people that frequent this forum, but I've already sifted out a lot of the ones that I believe know about what they're talking.  I suspect a large number of people have done the same for Tom (Clark) and they may or may not be correct.

Spell checker helps me a lot.  I have a lot of trouble with spelling and even more with typing.

Spell how you want (Canadian, real English, or backwoods) but please don't post any more country music.  I have my limits.   Wink

Could Admin add one to the preview panel? Looks to be the place for it. If I plan to submit a longer message, I'll put it into word to check spelling and grammer before posting. My brother owned and operated a sign shop for years and couldn't spell. Fortunately for his business, he used a spell checker most of the time. He did make some interesting signs when he wasn't using it though.  2funny

I'm not sure that's an option with this board.

I personally use Mozilla Firefox which has one built in.  It checks as I type which I find most effective.

Maybe someone could suggest spell checkers that can be added to Internet Explorer and other browsers.

There's much truth in what you say.  Ignorance, in my opinion, comes in two flavors; experiential and intentional.  Intentional ignorance is shameful.

Wow!  Now this post has opened a cosmically wide opportunity for debate.  What is "intentional ignorance"?

If, having graduated from high school, I never in my life bother to improve my English skills by reading, accessing a dictionary from time to time, or by writing with the intent to become better, am I intentionally ignorant?  Or am I just more or less bovine in my life, accepting that whatever they taught me in school was all I really needed to know?

If I choose to not read about world events, or the economy, if I choose to take my "news" exclusively from the world of TV, am I willfully ignorant?  If I choose to go with the "party line", to side with one view or another because it is easier than forming an independent opinion, am I willfully ignorant?

That is to say... the level of my experiential ignorance in this day and age is entirely up to me... there is absolutely a wealth of information from so many sources that if I am "unknowing of", it is due to the fact that I willfully refuse to take the time to become non-ignorant... everything from spelling to economics to world power struggles.

I have noticed a lot of incorrect spelling but it really doesn't bother me. My Mom & Dad only went to school through the sixth grade and neither could spell worth a darn. They spelled a word by how it sounded to them. Love was "luv" grandpa was "granpaw" and the list goes on. They have both been gone for several years now, but when I get some of their cards out they sent me, it brings back great memories of their love for the family. I didn't consider them to be ignorant, just unlearned which is what Willow was saying but the word ignorant is usually interpreted as demeaning. What I noticed more than incorrect spelling is word choice. Example is I road today instead of rode. Again it doesn't really bother me all that much, I still understand what is being said. Ride Safe.
