It had experienced hydrolock and as suspected, the gears were messed up. The PO had to have been asleep when trying to start it however. When I got out my inspection mirror to review the damage in the starter mount hole, I was apalled anyone would have caused what I was seeing. The gear that the starter actually is inserted into has been ground to nothing but a wheel. Every tooth is gone. There are chunks of metal laying all over inside that area where the starter mounts. I removed the oil filler cap/plug and there are chunks of gears laying in the bottom. This guy must have kept hitting the starter without paying any attention to the grinding sound. Absolutely inexcusable. And, as expected there is a chunk broken off an internal boss on the rear cover so I'll have to replace that entire piece. The bike in general appears to have been neglected big time but it will be a class act by the time I'm done with it.
Anybody need a set of OEM saddlebag mounts? The bags are history(heat damage) and I'm not going to replace them.
UPDATE: After looking a bit deeper there is debris all over inside the engine. Frankly, I'm not sure I want to chance selling the bike to someone I might know and have the junk in there cause trouble down the road. I have access to a good replacement engine for a decent price and I'm seriously considering using it. It would certainly speed up the repair work and would put my mind at ease when I sell it. The prior owner just kept grinding on the starter and there is loose shavings along with CHUNKS of teeth everywhere I look. The only way a person could be certain it was clean internally would be to split the case and I don't plan to do that. What are some of your thoughts on this. The bike has just under 30k on the clock.

If you have access to a good motor, just do the swap. Sometimes a heart transplant is just the thing for a bad ticker.

Ditto.....replace the motor. Then, after you give the chubby chick her make-over you'll have a motor to play with and rebuilt at your leasure.

+1 see if you can fix it, if you have to split the block, just buy a motor from ebay dont part the fat lady out, they are great to have around on the road instead of parts here and there. I saved a fat lady after huricane katrina she sat for like 3 years, bought the bike for $750 have put about $1500 to mabye $2000 for a motor, new carb bank, tires, battery, autometer temp gauge, autometer oil press. i love my black beast, if i had to do it all over again i would, for me being 23 years old, i could not have bought a better first bike

Will work on that assignment today. My good camera crapped out on a trip so have to use the big substitute. It works fine but takes more size adjusments. Might put them on an off-site album instead of Photostash.

Good luck with the Valk!

Was thinking about this today. Is it possible that there may have been a heat related electrical issue that caused the started to engage and stay engaged, thus causing the mentioned damage.

Not in this case. The hydrolock had already taken place and he had the bike in the shop for them to figure out what had happened. This was the second time for it so they obviously didn't fix the cause the first time, only the results. As I understand it, while it was in the shop they had a fire break out near where the bike was sitting, causing heat damage to some exterior parts; saddlebags(left one is really bad), taillight and turn signal lens on the left side, left reflector on the license plate bracket. Blistered the driver's seat and cooked the corider pillion. I'm not replacing the saddlebags, but the rest of the parts I have in my "stash" including the internal gears if I should decide to go that route.

I already removed and sold the OEM saddlebag mount. They cleaned up real nice, no flaking or peeling of the chrome. In one picture I added an arrow to show the one remaining tooth on the starter gear. I had to use a mirror to get the shot, lots of debris in the bottom end, some I got out with a magnet but not all. I also have a replacement OEM seat set for it, got it when I picked up the "new" pipes. http://s931.photobucket.com/albums/ad159/stuffy402/Hydrolocked%20Valkyrie%20project/

Sorry Eric, not for sale. As for parts, the only thing I don't have is the saddlebags but I already sold the bag mount so it's a moot point. I even have all the internal repair gears for the starter if I decide to go that route instead of replacing the engine. In any case, it will be as close to perfect as possible when it rolls out to begin a new life.

that's what I've been saying about olde chrome. Today's epa regulations make it unprofitable to chrome the way it should be done. In one picture I added an arrow to show the one remaining tooth on the starter gear. I had to use a mirror to get the shot ....
Nice job with the mirror!

Ebay! yep, just placed a bid on a used set. good luck with your project. Today I pulled the exhaust and got a bunch of raw gas running out of #4. So, guess where the hydrolock happened? Also pulled the tank, then the airbox lid. HOLY COW! I don't think the air filter has ever been changed. It's so clogged up I couldn't blow through it with an air hose....absolutely filthy. It's not the color of replacement filters so I'm betting it's the factory original....kinda yellowish. When I pulled the pipes, I also removed the rear mounting brackets for them. That leaves the frame towards the rear available for use of jack stands. I first ran the front wheel into a heavy duty wheel chock, then raised the bike slightly and slipped a jack stand under each side of the frame about 2" behind the two subframe bolts. The bike is rock steady now so tomorrow I start pulling stuff off to remove the engine. I'll post updates and pix as work progresses. Probably will be a new thread.
