Gunny, where and when did you do Boot Camp?

I was April 1950, San Diego. CA.

Same place, eighteen years later.  I was 3rd battalion so we lived in quonset huts that seemed to be WW II vintage.  I may have slept in the same rack you used.   Smiley

I recently went through my platoon "yearbook" to check whether anyone in my boot camp platoon was on the Vietnam memorial wall.  I found that only one of my platoon mates was there.  He arrived in Vietnam in April the day before his nineteenth birthday and was dead eight days later.  I didn't even complete my specialty school in Quantico until May.

When my parents basement flooded the spring of 51, I lost my year book and all my photos.

My buddy from home who enlisted with me, we ended up in a platoon of Reserves from Hawaii.   They hadn't did their Boot Camp requirement, so they got stuck in San Diego with a couple of hick's from the Midwest.   After Boot, they went back to Hawaii.

I found a couple of their names on the wall.  I have a link to the wall and you can search by name, state and etc.

http://www.virtualwall.org/iStates.htm

I was in the 5th Division out of Boot and went almost immediately to Korea.
13 months later I came home and got Swamp Lejeune, and encountered a 90 day wonder.    We fell out in formation one morning and after inspecting my MP's, he proceeded to rip my lettuce off my chest, said I was too young for the rank and chest lettuce. and ripped my jacket in the process.

Base commander and I both served in the Trap and came home together.   After inspection I went to the Colonel's office and told him what happened.   He ripped the 2nd Louie a new A'Hole.  He told him that I had more time in combat then he had days in the USMC.  He had to buy me a new jacket, get my rank and all my lettuce replaced and present it to me a high noon on the Parade field.

I also asked for a transfer to anywhere.   Nothing open at the time in the MP's so I went back to Korea, the 2nd Louie also got assigned to Korea.    I found his name on the wall.    He arrived in the same draft I did and was KIA one day later per the writeup on the wall.

I don't know how it happened but I ended up in the 1st Division.     Same one my dad was in when he hit Iwo Jima.   Small world I guess.

R J is a real hero, Jimmy, and he was a young man who's father was sacrificed on the alter of our freedom.

I don't normally make a big deal of my time in because I was never put in a position to have anyone shooting at me.

I have a warm spot in my heart (and sometimes a lump in my throat) for those who have chosen to be put into harm's way.   They are heroes because, in the words of one story teller,
Quote
they stand on a wall and say, "Nothing's going to hurt you tonight, not on my watch."

And they will always have my unqualified gratitude.

After God brought me out of the Reservoir unhurt, and I was stupid enough to ask for a 2nd Tour in Korea, then God let me pay just enough for it that I'll be cursed if I'll ask for a 3rd Tour.    God has his ways of getting your attention, especially if you are a 19 and 20 year old punk, and you never run from a fist fight.

Got my ass kicked, adjusted and reoiled a few times.  So then I learned Judo, and really kicked some ass.     Had a little 5' -5" feather merchant who really gave me a ass kicking.      We ended up going to Korea together and he was in the Trap with me.     Our last day of our Reverse March, he stepped on 2 land mines, buried side by side.    The concussion from the 1st one set off the 2nd one.   We picked him up in 3 black bags and hauled him to the Motician area.     The Mortician said he was in 15 pieces.    UGLY.......  That was when I decided I didn't want to go into that field of work.    So instead I became a CHP motor Officer.

Modification:      Would I do it over, hell yes, it kept my sorry butt out of jail, and with no dad, I was headed that way.    Step-dad was not restrictive with me, he let me do as I damn well felt like doing, and then stood up to mom for me when I did something and got in trouble.

The Marine Corps kicked my butt a few times and gave me KP duty or Guard duty when I got out of line.

1st assignment out of Boot Camp, I got stuck with 11 straight weeks of KP duty.  To this day I respect that T/Sgt.    He is in his 90's now and we still correspond.  He lives in a retirement home in oHIo.   He was too orney to pass away......

Thanks.

Thanks RJ, for bringing me up to speed on your service.  I had a friend at work who also was a Marine at the Chosen. He didn't talk about it much but once remarked that they were driving bulldozers off some cliffs and hoping that they would land right side up without damage so they could get the hell out of there.

I was very lucky.  My MOS was medical aideman but i ended up driving a truck in a medical outfit north of the parellel. In 1953 the Korean war was winding down.  However, one of  my buddys was reassigned as an aideman and was killed by a Chinese burp gun five days after he hit Korea.

I didn't see action but I saw the results, especially when the North Koreans were making a last ditch effort before the Truce was signed.

Now, it seems,  they are thinking that they have the guts to try it again, hopefully without China helping them this time.

Yeah, RJ, the present POTUS has no idea of what to do.

I just looked up some info on the Korean war.  KIA's were;  Army 27,704,  Marines 4,267,  Air Force 1,198, and Navy 458.  A total of 33,627 US troops killed in three years as compared to 47,367 killed in 10 years in Vietnam.   272,975 Korean ROK army casualties.  Over two million civilians killed both North and South.  Now we have the SOB in North Korea thinking that his balls are huge and we have a commander-in- Chief who............ , no I won't say it. That little Bastard was either in daddy's bag or still in diapers when we were over there.

I looked at his picture again and I'd estimate him as in his late 30's maybe early 40's.

So he would of still been a dream in daddy's head.

If 'Fung Chew' attacks, he will get a quick solution to his problem, and a surprise at the same time.

If Bam Bam is like Truman was with MacArthur we will be in for another Police Action.

Bam Bam will have to get his $.02 in and if it will hurt his Muslim buddies, he will not give our Military any support.

So let's hope to hell he says go for it and end the problem.

Yes, I know, Bam Bam is the main problem.

He has shown the world he is a pussy cat.....   Fast talking one so long as he has a Tele-Prompter.

If he attacks, it's gonna be like Vietnam.  Decisions will be made in Washington, not by the field commanders.  Don't worry tho, we have a highly qualified commander-in chief capable of making decisions at the drop of a teleprompter.

Oh yeah!

Then I will be a winner again

Of course riding the bmw police bike with the heated grips is a winner as well   That bike does pull away from lots of others and can hold its own up to speeds I no longer have a desire to surpass

Thanks Wayne and Russ for your service and words of wisdom  Keep em comin gents

WHAT THE HELL?? STEALING MY LAST WORD??? I HAD THE LAST WORD FIRST!!! (A sentence that would have no possibility of making any sense except for this thread)

DISQUALIFICATION!!! FIB MUST BE DISQUALIFIED.  tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff

There is the "buying of rounds" exception however.  Rule 614. 23, sec. 2, paragraph 4.

Stealing of a word is 4 rounds.

I submit, as evidence of my first submission of the word Zyzzyva the following post from FEB. 2012

Wait a minute, that was f6gal's word.
STILL ISN'T RIGHT! ABOVE PENALTY STILL APPLIES! tickedoff tickedoff

But as we all can see from the posts I've submitted as evidence, Zyzzyzus, the word I submitted, is the last word.

THE LAST WORD

zy'mologist

World English Dictionary
zymology  (zaɪˈmɒlədʒɪ)

— n
the chemistry of fermentation

zymologic

— adj

zymo'logical

— adj

zy'mologist

— n

I win

Correction, I win!

The last word:

zyz·zy·va  [ziz-uh-vuh]
noun
Any of various South American weevils of the genus Zyzzyva,  often destructive to plants.

P.S.  nanner-nanner!

This may actually be the last word.

Zyzzyzus

Zyzzyzus is a small genus of marine[1] tubulariid hydrozoans.[2]

I believe I shall claim victory. For now.

Oh, nanner nanner.

Hey Willow, I was there four years before you, only on the other side of the fence where it was more civilized.   Cheesy  Grin  Hoser

lol!  You have no idea what nice things the Marine drill instructors had to say about the other side of the fence.   Smiley

You got that right.    They even said nice things back in 1950.....
