Only regret I have for time served is I didn't make a career of it. At 20 years old and a T/Sgt, I'd of been a M/Sgt at the next jump.
Ranks have all changed since I was in.
I got to road Sgt. and that was it for me. The Lieutenant was a was a lifer and stayed till that last dog was gone. When the chief left they asked me if I wanted the job and I told them NO. I was short and there was no point. The retirement they have now vs what I have really makes mine look minor in comparison.

After 7 years of service, I got out in ’89 as a Sgt. If I would have stayed in I would have probably been killed in one of the three wars we went through. Talk about missing a built(s).

When I was in the USMC, I drank my share and then some. We got FREE beer in Korea. Also when we went after the beer in our supply truck we would always manage to get about 10 cases of Scotch, that were NOT in our allotment.
When I joined the CHP, we could not drink, if we did we were fired on the spot. They considered us on duty 24/7.
So after my tenure on the force, I never had a desire to drink again. Kind of like smoking, once ya quit, ya got no desire to light up again. LOL.

When I started a the local P.D. I was issued the handbook like usual. It seemed kind of antiquated but I read it. Then I found it, the surprise of a lifetime. It stated: "An officer may not retain a blood alcohol lever of more than .06 while on duty at any time". I started to laugh. I went into the chiefs office and request permission to speak. He said go ahead. I asked him if he had seen the handbook? He said no, he hadn't gotten to it yet. I said O.K., I'm headed to the bar for a beer. I was in uniform working the road. He said Bullshit your are! I said right here it says as long as I don't exceed .06, which I won't, there is no problem. Let me see that! I gave him the book. He read it and said, set your ass down and he was on the phone. He called every officer on the department and had them come to the office. When everyone was there he said: "IF any of you even try this, you are fired. This is and always will be a "0" tolerence department, got it"? He then said: "Hooter" you will rewrite the entire handbook within the next week so we don't hear banjo music every time we have to use it", since your found this little tid bit. I did, and it, the old book was funny. I think I still have it some place?

Hooter, one of the very first jobs the USAF gave me was to rewrite the Maxwell AFB traffic code. 1984, and horses were still covered in the current one. Most of it was fine, but it definitely needed updated. Because I detested wearing bright orange safety vests on a base with a max speed anywhere of 35, I deleted that requirement. I left the requirement for sleeves, gloves, boots and a helmet. Next time I hit the gate with no vest the guys thought they had me. I showed them the new code, and told them the requirement had been removed (yes I planned ahead). They said who did that?, and I said I did. How can you do that? Easy, I left it out and the base commander signed it. Lieutenants have very little power, but we do what we can.

RJ, in 9 years' service, I had exactly one SSgt assigned to me, a great guy who ran the admin side of our two man Defense counsel shop for one short tour. I had great respect for NCOs. The only couple of times I ever exercised rank was a couple of fracases where I made jr enlisted men stop acting like boys. And it never went further than that.

One thing I failed to mention. this chief was a new hire as was I. He was an 'X" Vietnam Vet and pretty much military. That was the way he ran the department. I loved this guy he put up with no crap! Died a young man from an embolism after knee surgery. Just wasn't right. I cried.

Hooter, I suppose you are right, BUT, when I retire the next time it will be in a vase 6 ft under the grass. I think they bury cremains that deep. I know when we buried my mom we used a post auger to make the hole. Never measured how deep. We just pushed the auger in as far as it would go.
Dropped her urn in da hole and her brother-in-law read some verses from the Bible.
We put the dirt back in and left. We took her out to the cemetery as she wanted one last ride on a bike. We gave her a 50 mile run to get to the Cemetery. Sure hope she enjoyed it.
On her Birthday from 60 on up, she got a ride on the bike wherever she wanted to go.

I did the same for my best friend and his mother, just like that. Marty had died a year prior and his mother had just passed away. With permission from the city / sexton I only dug the hole with a shovel and about 2 ft deep, so maybe there isn't much of a requirement? Maybe each area is different? I had to retrieve part of Marty's ashes from my Godson's (his son) saddlebag and the rest from his mother's home. At his mothers he was in his favorite coffee cup...The rest we did just like you. Place both urns in the hole and covered them. I said a few words and so did the boys. It was the right way and the way "they" wanted it done. It was about their last wishes not about us.

Wife and I are to be buried in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery and both us us are to be cremated. If I go 1st, the kids will have to pay $400 for mom to be buried with me. She goes before me, then I got to pay $400 to put her in where I will go.
This way the kids don't have a firkin thing to argue about, except as for who gets which Trike. the older 3 have abandoned ship so they are crap out of luck on getting anything. The will even states that and they all 5 know what is in the will. Youngest daughter is the executor of our estate. She is a tough little gal and her siblings know to not argue with her as they will never win.
I think that is the reason she has gone so far up in the Construction Engineer field at work. She interned for them for 3 years, she graduated College and they hired her as a glorified Secretary, now she is a Project Manage of 6 projects. In a meeting the other day, her boss, (owner of the company) had his annual meeting prior to raises, and she was talked up very good and got a .12% raise. Put her somewhere around 90K a year.

My X Deputy Chief is now an undertaker. He gets the priviledge of having me cremated as well. No services, no fu fu no nothing. Then at the next house fire he is to notify the family and to "let 1/2 of me go". Ashes to ashes. After that He is then to take the other half of my ashes to the P.D where I spent 24 years as a cop. Thats also where my younger brother is chief and let the other half go. In that order! If he doesn't, I'll haunt his ass. I told him I'd be in h As for my wife, she doesn't want cremation, she wants a conventional burial. Well alrighty then, so be it. Everything is set and my son is executor, he is an attorney and understands my wishes. He doesn't like them, but its not his game. Pretty much seals the deal.
