I bailed my way through high school. The pay was good and kept my dates happy. I would fill the wagon then head to the mow. Itched my ass off with chafe and was filthy but loved it.  cooldude
Almost my exact story.  Kids in school called me HayHauler and it stuck...  sort of built like a HayHauler I suppose.  Smiley

As is the story for many of us here, I grew up with nothing, we were just getting by. So I worked my way through high school so I could have some money and help the folks out at the same time. Not only bailing hay but working at a pine tree / blueberry farm. Planted trees, harvested them for Christmans and trimmed them in the summer. Shook blueberries and ran crews. I did this stuff up until the first of the year each year (Christmas time), and it started all over again every May first. Did this until I graduated.
I would work until roughly 10:00 each night then go home and do my homework. That was only after I got out of baseball, basketball and football practice. I was a jock   Roll Eyes  loved to play sports but I actually liked to work to. Wierd I guess, but I didn't have time to set around on my butt.

I grew up in the Depression, living on a farm.   Started life in Sept 1932.  Left the farm in 1941 when Dad went in the Service.    Grandpa & Grandma still lived out there, so I worked on the farm in the summer time when school was out.   During school, I played in several sports, Wrestling, Football, Baseball, was too firkin short for Basketball.   I tried it and they all were well above my height and I got walked on cause they didn't see me.   Not a problem seeing me today, got enough bulk to stop a freight train, mostly BELLY fat.

Used to mow lawms for $0.25 to $0.75 a lawn.    Corner lot was $1.00.

When it would rain consistently the yards had a tendency to get away from me.  That was a beech trying to get caught up.    Cheesy    Didn't mow in the rain like they do now, oh, it was a push mower also.

We were dirt poor till I went in the Service and was still dirt poor on $75.00 a month pay, Military pay that is, at least I had free health and dental.    LOL   Smiley

Got discharged, went to work for a Delivery Service in town on a Motorcycle w/Sidecar.   It paid $1.25 an hour.  Today the place is still in business only they use 3/4 ton vans now.  Moved back to California and went on the CHP till I retired.   Only took California like 2 years to decide they wanted to hire me after asking me if I wanted a job about 2 years earlier.

I don't have a problem with my old young life, as it turned out pretty well in my opinion.     Yeah, I know, it only took me 24 years to get my College Degree, however I got one.

Tried to instill this same work ethics into my kids, and I think I did pretty good, none of them have been into Drugs or in jail.

Cheers everyone.    I'm going to go beat on my chest now for awhile.....    LOL.    cooldude cooldude cooldude

Just like RJ, I started life at the start of the Great Depression in 1928, only I lived in the city.   We went through the Depression, dad was working until 1942 and then had to retire on medical.  Mom didn't work, and only two of my four sisters worked. I had a paper route,  mowed lawns for .25 cents then  worked at the GE war Plant during high school. Four hours every night, after school,  and then home for lesson assignments. 8 hours on Saturday.

I helped support the family until I was drafted. I came back out, worked as a registered Xray tech,  Xray Service tech. Quality control Defense plant, Industrial engineer, and associate Environmental engineer.  The wife and i both worked and raised a family of four.  I retired in 1991.  Wife died in 2002.

I didn't work on a farm but I worked and worked hard.  I only have the equivalent of an associate degree but didn't need a four year one.

Today, i think that the work ethic is fast disappearing from what I've seen.

We might have been born 30 years apart, but I was told by my dad, I was sheet on a rock and hatched by the sun.

He always said they took a ride on the Indian the night before & I was no longer in the belly, water broke and I was the result, 45 days early.

I think a lot of any ethics are leaving or are gone. Now we have a bunch of system rats that don't need to work. Been made too easy to do nothing. I'd rather flip burgers than set on my ass and do nothing. Oh, morals left a long time ago.

Only way I'll flip burgers is if Obama takes my Social Security monthly check away from me.   I've earned my no workie pay.

So yupper, now I does set on me arse and draw $$$$, but I paid into it for many many years.

Don't get me started on this free samp;es stuff that has turned into a full time handout.

I also say, if a kid is born out of wedlock, the Govt should give them assistance on the 1st one, and no more after that.

There is a lady a couple of blocks over from us, who has 9 rug rats currently running around and has another one in the cooker, due out in like 3 or 4 months.   I think I heard someone say it will get her another $1,100 a month.

My post was mostly about the people that haven't "earned" what they get and have no intentions of trying to work. Plenty of them in their 20s and 30s here that do just that.

I was at the kids shop day last Monday after my Dr appt.

He was working on this guys pickup.

We got to talking and he told me if he can't get a job that pays at least $75,000, he isn't going to take nothing less.

Asked him if he had a degree, he flat out told me he didn't need no firkin College Degree to get a job that pays those kind of wages.

After more discussion, I found out he is getting food stamps, housing asistance, and help on his Electric bill.

I thought to myself, he is one worthless scum bag.   Son got his pickup finished, handed him his bill, he tore it up.    Son said, sorry to see you do that, as your pickup is not leaving this lot till the bill is paid in full.

He told him he had another set of keys at home and he'd be back tonight and get it.     Son told him to come and get it if you are real brave.   You will have to get the sliding gate open at the impound lot and past 4 Pit Bulls who don't like people they don't know in the lot at night.

Pickup is stil there drawing nightly storage lot fees.

My last deputy chief lost his job when the company he worked for folded. He ran his unenjoyment out till the end and never looked for a job. He told me that he wouldn't work for less than what  he made at his prior job. That was $24.00 an hour for settin on his ass. That made him a $100,000.00 a year employee. He thought he deserved to be paid that no matter where he went. NO wonder the company folded. He turned into a system rat and still is.

Right now I have 7 of my officers here and 19 fire trucks to inspect. I think for now I have enough to occupy my time. At least for the next several hours and I've already put in a full day. This was deomolition derby day on the roads here. All we've done is run accidents with 2 extrications.

Wow, this post made it to page 8 and Hooter was the last input on May 29.

Sorry Hooter, you lost your bottom post for now.

Did ya get all that equipment inspected?

I used to hate it when i drew School Bus inspection.      I'd reject them for a small fraction and it pissed all the school bus providers off.

If I or one of my fellow inspections flunked a bus, it was OFF the road till repaired and reinspected.    They lost revenue if it wasn't on the road.

Vell as long as no one got seriously injured and out of work for 6 weeks or longer, NO problem, just a daily deal.

When I 1st went into Motors at work, we akmost lost a 1/3 of our unit.

They were acting like Hot Dogs and several of them were in accidents.    It almost cost us our Motor unit.   That would have meant back to the Cruisers, yuck.    It was bad enough when we had bad weather.

As my Grandmother used to say, it happened for a reason........

My middle daughter was like that.  I threatened her if she didn't slack off a whole bunch.

Ended up she took one of my old plain cell phones, had it fixed to be her #.  All it does is ring, ya answer and then hang up.    No thrills available.

Last I hheard the kids said she was real attentative to their sports and things at school now.

So, I feel it is log one up for her kids and her Dad getting pissed off at her.

My cousins new wife has non stop interference from  her 3 daughters. The phone rings and they text her non stop all day / evening. We try to do something together and she is on the phone constantly one way or another. Set down to dinner or any meal for that matter,  out comes the phone. I don't ask him to do anything with him much any more because she annoyes me so much. The phone is her life.  Not to mention my cousin and her are stuck to each other like glue. I don't know who doesn't trust who but wow! He can't crap without her with him and vise versa. Makes me wanna puke!
Oh, her kids are in their 20s and early 30s. Must just be me but enough is enough.
