the other day i was watching some cycle racing on SPEED TV.  i started thinking of those cycles, and how increadably fast they are!  then i started thinking about other "races".  you know, NASCAR, Formula 1, LaManns, Ralley, etc. etc.....  it dawned on me, people that have thier favorite NASCAR driver usually drive the same type of vehicle, so-n-so races a Ford, that's why i drive one, so-n-so races a Yamaha, that's why i have an R1, blah blah blah......

so then i started thinking, what do harley's race?  i've never heard of a harley making a "race bike".  well, the V-Rod was pretty hot (my opinion), then they got rid of Buell (stupid idea, again my opinion). what does a harley guy think when he buys one?  i can not think of any harley's in the racing circuit, so, are there??

if ya wanna see something that actually is BADASS.. go to an all harley drag race event and check out the NITRO harleys.. INCREDIBLE.. the front wheel doesnt touch the asphalt for most of the run.. they steer w body english. the rider lays over top of the motor.. there are nylon straps prolly 3 inches wide and 3/8 inches thick over top of the heads to keep the nitro from blowin em off Right thru the riders chest.. they also wear a flak jacket. those guys are FRIGGIN NUTS..

My next door neighbor races Pro-Stock Drag bike.

http://www.nhra.com/drivers/driver.aspx?CompetitionCategory=motorcycle&DriverAlias=Wesley-Wells&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

He races against HD's all the time.  Well, sort of.  They are dominated by HD's and Buells.  But they have different rules...  the twins can run 145" while the 4 hole bikes are limited to 92".  They may have given them a few more inches a couple years ago...

He does 60' times in less than 1 second @ 80+ MPH!!!  Wow!

Some of the things those guys do to go a few hundreths faster is CRAZY.

He went down 4 or 5 years ago in the decel portion.  He had slowed to about 120 MPH.  Said he was suddenly sliding on the track.  Said this is what went thru his mind... "WTF?  huh, I'm on the asphalt... this ain't so bad.  oooooh hot, Hot Hot HOT HOT HOT gotta turn over... that's better... oooh hot Hot... HOT..."

He's not been racing hard the last season or two.

yep they flat track over seas a lot,,every once in a while you can catch em on speed..the races where they only race 4 at a time are ok but sorta boring but when they turn 24 of them things loose at once, its katy bar the door...

They show them now and then on TV.  The flat track circuit doesn't have as big a following as NASCAR or MotoGP, but they,re still alive and well.

Vance & Hines still run a Buell.

Has been beaten very few times in the last few years.

All Harley Drags are fun to watch, especially the Nitro bunch.

Yeah, they blow a head or 2 off every once in awhile.   However, not like they did when they first started using Nitro.

Also, go to the Salt Flats and watch the Harley's, especially BUB aka Big Ugly Bastard.

Jeez, no one has been to the Peoria TT races? No one has heard of Chris Carr, the "Prince of Peoria?"
13 wins at the Peoria Il, Grand National TT races. I live there and he was a sight to see. Bet he could ride that track blindfolded.

taken from Wikipedia;

Carr was in contention for the 2006 Grand National Championship at the final race at Scioto Downs in Columbus, Ohio before dropping out with mechanical problems. He ended the season tied for fourth in points behind chief rival Kenny Coolbeth.[2]

from what i've read with all the responces is that Harley's are good for short quick jonts back some 20+ years ago....

now, it might sound like i'm "harley" bashing, (yes and no) but i was wondering, other than the clothing line, what else does harley do to promote thier following.

They dont have to promote, that the beauty of it.

I been to alot of HD sponsored open houses. Big name big name concerts, etc. Alot better open houses then what Honda or others have.
