I strive to never touch another persons stuff w/o permission,,, RESPECT.
EXACTLY That's all it is, plain and simple.....respect for someone else's property. The respect to not screw with their stuff without their permission first. I seem to be taking a beating here (and no Mike, you're not humorous...at all) because I'll show you the respect to not touch your bike without first having your invitation to do so. Apparently, there's alot of people here that feel it's perfectly fine to to mess with someone else's property and vise versa and don't understand that one word.....respect. If you don't want to ride with me because I wouldn't want you screwing with my ride, then that's perfectly fine with me. If you think it's fine to mess with someone else's bike without their invitation, then I wouldn't want to ride with you either. I'll look at and admire your bike all day long, but I have the respect to NOT touch it. Obviously, alot of you don't have that same respect. Accidents do happen.....that's understandable, but ike someone else said.....the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I'd offer to loan you my cleaning supplies if needed (hell, I'd give you the shirt off of my back if you needed it), but I'm sure as hell not going to take it on my own to start to clean your bike for you. Ii's your bike....not mine afterall. I suppose that if something like this would have happened to you, then you'd be OK with it then.....after all, she ment no harm....it's just things afterall......

Depends how good the Buddy is I guess...
If it was a casual acquaintance... I would not do it. If it was Squealy or a couple other buds... no problem.
They can touch, fondle, borrow, ride whatever they need from me. And they know it. They have keys to the house and garage, and if I ain't home, they can come in and get what they need.
If you don't have a few buddies like that... you're doing it wrong in MY humble opinion.
Jabba
I agree with Jabba...I have several good friends that I will lend anything I have and can borrow anything they have..we have keys and go into each others houses.we have swapped bikes on rides (I always feel I'm getting the worst part of the swap) Then there are just friends...I would not touch their bike, car or whatever without asking, it's a matter of respect. Jess did you buy him another cup of coffee?

BF, first of all you're right . everyone derserves respect. it's just that everyone's definition of that is a little different.
i got to be honest with you, i don't think that what jess described is equivalent to two drunk girls, vandelizing what appears to be a stranger's bike, and fleeing the scene. maybe the bottom line is the same but i think it would process a little differently to most folks. just my opinion.
i'm new to valks, heck i grew up riding an on/off road bike but have had very little experience ridingroad bikes. i've got alot to learn. first ride i went on last fall with this crew, i commented to an experienced rider (and a great guy) that my bike seemed awfully cold natured. he showed me that the max setting for the choke was significantly further than it felt like it should be. nothing broke but i guess it could have. i'm going to show some flexibility to folks that have my back. i'm not trying to convince you to change your mind, just trying to get you to see where some other folks are coming from.
like others have said there's folks that can mess with my stuff and there's folks that can't, it's rare that they don't know who they are. if someone screws up i let them know.
btw, you make numerous helpful posts, especially for us newbies, and the new bags and box look awesome.

And that fellow had your permission to do so. That's all I'm saying.....with an invitation, fine...have at it. But show the other fellow the respect to not mess with his ride without being first invited to do so.....buddy or no.

Jess did you buy him another cup of coffee?I offered to go in and get him another cup, several times. He understandably got more pissed off at the coffee in the helmet, than the windshield repair, and didn't want any more.... grumbling "this just gets better and better," pouring the coffee out of his helmet. I would have been laughing, if I wasn't in purgatory. He knocked it over with the windshield (after I offered to hold it; windy)....... but I set it in motion. I also offered lunch, but he wouldn't accept it, not in spite but because I was almost forgiven by then. I hope we can laugh about it down the road, but I will not be bringing it up anytime soon.

I do hereby grant permission to any member of this board to clean my windshield, wash my bike, check my air pressure or fill my gas tank.

Jabba
I know of at least on time I clean Jabbas windshield/faring off before leaving the hotel for that day's ride. I went out the bike with a wet hotel towel, hung it on the windshied of my bike and went and got a cup of coffee.... Came back out and removed the towel from bike and hung it on the windshield of Jabba's bike. Proceeded to clean my shield with a micro fiber cloth and Hondaline spray. Get done with mine and take the towel off Jabba's and clean it the same way.... NBD.... that's what buddies are for...

Jess, if it was me, I would not have cared. You tried to help. The bike is a thing and things are easily replaceable. I would have thanked you for trying.
You're way wrong. Those "things" belong to someone else and unless invited, you have no right to mess with it no matter the good intentions. You touch my bike uninvited that I've put my time, effort and hard earned money into, and you might as well walk into my house, eat all of my food and hit on my wife while your at 'cause I see no difference. your alot mellower than i............touching my bike, truck, significant other would gain you a new joint in your leg............... and BF its nice to someone on this board with some morals Dam glad to meet you (hows that mike?)
