On ts face it sounds like a good thing....less unisured drivers driving.  However, people find ways! They will still get their gas somehow, and the many foul-ups that will no doubt be happening (blocking properly insured by mistake) will make this system be a BAD thing if they try it here.

My wifes son gets fines through the DMV all the time (mistake in identity) for someone else.

What about when you by a car, call your insurance agent and he says "your covered" but it takes days to get confirmation.........can you get gas on the way home, probably not

Or.......like in FLorida, you arent required to have motorcycle insurance if you have the bike paid off...(not that its a smart thing to do)...no gas for you!

Or you are co-signed on a kids car loan but they have their own insurance, but you know how kids are.....they let it laps and you are there at the pump...NO GAS FOR YOU!

Need to insure the driver instead of the car. Anything else is a money grab.

Agreed, except that we seem to be using them as a blueprint and following right along...

I'm not sure about the system you have in America regarding insurance etc,it might be similar to ours.Over here the majority of police vehicle have a piece of equipment in them called ANPR,Automatic Number Plate Recognition. It reads every licence plate of every vehicle which comes into view,it don't matter if they are behind you or your coming towards them. When the unit reads the licence plate it hooks up with a central database and will tell the police officer if the car has any insurance, vehicle safety test( MOT),road fund licence(we have to pay tax to use our roads) or if the car has been used for drugs, violence, driving off without paying for gas (bilking) or any other crime.
This all takes,,,,less than a second.
If the diver has no insurance, the car will be siezed by the police and they can only get it back with a valid insurance certificate. They also have to pay £175 (277$) for the tow truck plus £20 (31.65$) per day storage fee. If they don't collect the car within two weeks,it gets crushed.

By the way,our gas prices work out at 9.o2 $ per gallon.

Never understood the crush thing. Its an easy source of revenue and puts folks in affordable cars.
I say auction them.
