If your offended , you need a history lesson!!

Morning all, but not a good one. John Schmidt's daughter's fight with cancer has taken a fateful turn. Yesterday John heard from his son-in-law that she probably has two weeks, maybe less, left in her battle. Since many of you on the Florida board, and here on the big board know him well, I wanted to share with John's extended family on the Board's how hard this has been for him and his daughter's family. Please keep John, Rita and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with the inevitable outcome. John won't share this with you all but I feel compelled to do so. Stay strong my friend and if we can do anything to help, you know how to get in touch. God Bless you and keep you for all days.  angel

We start preparing when we are young for the loss of previous generations, whether we know it or not. Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a child, let alone two. Prayers sent.

I visited her the end of January and when I saw the change in her then, I knew. That bubbly personality was gone, she struggled just to move around in her big recliner, in constant pain. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999, and after a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, she did real good for eight more years. But, it was not to be, it returned in her bones and has slowly advanced. Most recently, her left femur snapped while trying to step up through the front door. Her youngest son was there and caught her but the pain was intense. Scans showed the cancer had eaten away the bone in that area to the point it wouldn't support her weight. It also showed she now had large spots all over her body and was going into some of the organs as well. Her long time dr. told her husband that he should probably call her family because he felt her time was short....two weeks, most likely less. I talked to her husband yesterday and she floats in/out most of the time, not able to converse and most of the time doesn't know who you are.

I'm flying out to New Orleans tomorrow, Monday, and will spend most of the week there. She's in Baton Rouge now but plans are to move her to a hospice unit closer to their home in Lutcher, about 45 miles south and is where they have lived and taught school for many years.

I can't thank all of you enough for your support. Keep Rita in your thoughts and prayers as well, with her Parkinson's disease she isn't able to go with me but will have someone checking on her daily. She is determined to make the trip to Illinois where the final service will be held.

We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

John & Rita
