A couple of threads were recently pulled... and subsequently re-posts or referrals to the removed threads were also removed.

First, if a thread needs to be removed, reposting it is unacceptable... if we wanted there, we would not have removed it.

Second, regardless of the orignal topic, if it instigates a thread degenerates to nothing but name-calling and bashing, it will likely be removed.  If it's plausible to remove only a couple of posts, we will.  But, I don't have the time or patience to nit-pick through an entire thread and edit or delete rampant offensiveness from the thread.

Sorry if you find this "handsy," but I was the one that pulled any threads over the last couple of days and I'm probably the most tolerant of the moderators.  But I'm also the least likely to take the time to edit a post or thread.

It's not how I'd handle things but it's not my forum. That said it just might circumvent some of the confusion if you took a minute to tell the person WHY you deleted it. Or you could just lock it with a brief explanation as to why. I know it seems like more work but it might actually end up being less in the end.

Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against a lively debate... but I don't know why some ppl here can't do so respectfully.  And really, does anyone here think they are going to change anyone else's mind?  If it were at all possible, it occur from a logical argument... certainly not from crap spewing.

i have had many posts deleted, sometimes i wonder why, other times it's obvious!!  Roll Eyes  but the question i sometimes have for myself is, why would another person take offense to what "I" have to say?  why are they insecure about their own belief?  if "I" can make them upset, then maybe they need to stand away from their view point and look at their beliefs from someone elses eyes.   maybe they're taking things too seriously and the satire of another will lighten up the tensions.  then again, maybe not......

Yes... Connie and  Willow...

thanks for moderating!!  If I don't like where a thread is going, I don't read it all...it's pretty simple.

F6Gal, I agree with your actions.

I was in the process of creating a post explaining why a thread started purely to attack (or poke in the eye) one member was not acceptable, even if it was a member who's posts are almost always designed to do the same thing to others.  And explaining that troll's posts are designed to incite hate and discontent for their own entertainment, and that any replies to those posts simply empower them.  And poof (which is fine).

I find it curious that some folks cannot distinguish between lively debate and personal attacks/insults.

It's not how I'd handle things but it's not my forum. That said it just might circumvent some of the confusion if you took a minute to tell the person WHY you deleted it. Or you could just lock it with a brief explanation as to why. I know it seems like more work but it might actually end up being less in the end.

So, you want me to contact everyone in the thread individually to explain?

No, just the originator.

The OP of the Jesus thread understood perfectly why it was pulled and was happy with the decision.

Yeah but not everyone's that understanding. You may start a post and not see what direction it took. The next thing you know it's gone and you don't know why. A quick PM would prevent that.

The reposter/complainer was someone who posted in the thread.  And the OP of the "other" thread was ok with the decision, as well.

I'm not sayin that it's a matter of being "okay" with it. You don't need anyone's permission to do what you did. It's simply a matter of abating confusion.

If I lock the thread, the garbage is still there... what does that accomplish?

What does it accomplish by deleting it? I'm of the belief that what a man says should be out there and he should either have to stand by it or stand down from it. I don't like information disappearing. You'll never catch me deleting anything I say because I said it for a reason. If I said something wrong or needlessly hurtful out of turn and I really think it needs to be addressed then I should apologize for it and I will (and have). But you can't just say things and pretend they never happened.

I know you think you know how well it would go if you were running things, but believe me, if we didn't moderate, this place would be overrun with spewing crap.  And everyone except the crap spewers would just go away.

I don't expect you to not "moderate". I've been a moderator and admin on discussion boards going back to 1999. I'm still an admin over on a Buell forum for that matter. I know you can't let the inmates run the asylum. But I also know what works because I do have a bit of experience with it. All I was doing was offering a suggestion of something that has worked in the past. Try it or do not.

Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against a lively debate... but I don't know why some ppl here can't do so respectfully.  And really, does anyone here think they are going to change anyone else's mind?  If it were at all possible, it occur from a logical argument... certainly not from crap spewing.

That's kind of a separate argument but no it's not. If anything it's going to just push the person on the fence onto the other side.

Pulled Threads? Pulled Threads? Connie, I believe you were adhering to the old seamstress adage, "A stitch in time saves nine." Obviously it works with words as well as fabric. I could not be a moderator; I am not moderate. I can not be tolerant, I am not tolerable. Any further questions are humbly referred to those on this board who have all the answers.
