Gilligan and Navigator - Wherever we ended up

Southwest Indiana

« on: May 20, 2009, 01:54:18 PM »

Navigator and I took a ride today with our new, full-face helmets.  cooldude The Valk had new tires, new timing belts and a bunch of other stuff in preparation for our ride to the Canadian Rockies next month.  Smiley While decelerating in a little country town, I heard a "clunk" from the rear drive train. At the next larger town, the same thing happened, but the “clunk” also began happening as I gently accelerated. We decided to head back to a main road and get some lunch. After stopping at a 3-way stop, which was about 3 miles from the town we wanted, a terrible “clackety-clack” noise came from the rear end, and the bike began to slow down. I shifted into second … “Clackety-clack!” I tried third … “Clackety-clack!” The Valk continued to slow down, so I coasted into the driveway that just happened to be there. We called AAA and were trailered back to Westside Honda in Evansville.  tickedoff We believe it’s the U-joint.

In any case, I have lost confidence in our old steed  Cry and am considering a Goldwing. We will test ride one tomorrow.

Possibly the pinion cup.

Driveshaft and pinion cup cost less than $150.

Sorry to hear that -- the breakdown.  Also sorry to hear about the Goldwing idea  2funny  If you get a new wing, you will just have to ride over to Carbondale to show it off.

I'll bet money on the Pinion cup also.  If it hasn't been serviced regularly, it will fail. Smiley

The good news is its not a terribly expensive thing to fix, as Daniel noted.

Same thing happened to my wife and I as we exited of I25 into Casper, WY. It took two days and about $450 to replace the drive draft and the cup. No big deal. Fix it and keep riding.

Mine did the same thing.  I was riding to work.  I nursed it to within a few blocks of home.  I then had to trailer it the rest of the way.
Mine was the U-joint.  I got one they pulled off a new Goldwing  for a trike conversion at the local Honda shop.  It cost me 75.00 to fix.  That was 40,000 miles ago.  No problem since.
I hate to see you spend money unless you just want a goldwing.

Ride safe

How do you service the pinion cup and where is it? Is it the spot where the drive shaft goes into? Hope so cause I pulled the drive shaft out and cleaned up some rust and regreased everything. This is the 1st time it was done in 46,000 miles.

Hang in there Gilligan. You both have alot of miles and memories on the Valk. Hate to see ya start all over again on a new bike!

I sold the 1500  1989 Wing after 78K and bought the Valk to lessen the plastic and old man/wife, white uniform, unfriendly  image. I did not "blend" with the Wing crowd nor did I try..I like jeans,T-shirt and hot beer if necessary due to the absence of ice and will not complain about the lack of perfection....I have 87K on the '98 Valk and when I loose confidence with it (not yet)...I have no idea where I'll look for a bike, but it won't be a car like bike Wing....I have no idea...good luck and Happy Trails on what ever lights a fire in your heart........... cooldude

Have you felt a small vibration in you footpegs as you crest a hill when you transition from no throttle to light throttle?  I changed mine for these symptoms, also changed the drive dampers to neoprene sold by Gary Eckerman.  No vibration any longer.  The u-joint had a very small amount of play.  I kept the old one just in case.  Change bikes if you feel like it, not because of one wear problem, how many miles on it?

How much do you want for the Valk?   My neighbor wants one  big time and a guy at work would really like one two.    As long as you
're happy with whatever you choose that ok I guess.
Shoot me an IM if you are serious about selling.

Fast Black is right you know!!

fix your Valk, the cheapst vehicle is the one your driving now!!  my friend had an '03 Goldwing he wanted to sell me for $8000, I always wanted a Wing, that is until I found my Valk!!  I guess, if you strip that Goldwing down to the frame you could put all your Valkyrie stuff on it and we wont tell anyone!!

I think you got it... I guess "service" is pulling the shaft out of the swingarm and lubing
both ends, which would include the end that mounts into the pinion cup... I've done it a
couple of times in 20k, but not every time I've replaced a tire... is there more to it?
Number 13 is the pinion cup...

I've lost two of the pinion cups, one on a tourer and one on my I/S.  Both my fault  for not catching the problem early and fixing it. It is easy to repair and not very exspensive.I got my parts from HDL very good service from them.
