I was mentioning backing up my pics in the other thread......I have done it a couple of times with an external hard drive I keep in a fire/waterproof safe......

I want to only save the newest pics that aren't already on that hard drive.....but I am not sure how to save ONLY the new ones without having over write the whole thing again.......I was wondering if I could have it save pics from the last 2 years??......and how would I go about doing that?.....I'd hate to have to look through each album to see what's on there and what's not........ Undecided

You should get a prompt asking if you want to do a partial or full backup.

Make sure that no new photos are in folders previously saved or they will get missed if you do a partial.

I usually make all new folders for each ride/event.....then I make a copy of each ride and use those files to do all my editing, cropping, lightening, etc, etc.....keeping the originals full sized

This seems like it would work.

Lets say you last did a backup on 06/01/11.

Go to your picture folder, and search for everything with a creation date
after 06/01/11.

After it is done, hit select all, and then copy.

Paste into a directory on your backup disk.

The best answer depends on how you did the original backup.  If you used software that runs the back up automatically for you, you need to know how it backs up and how it does updates to that main backup file.  It will likely tell you how to update a previous backup file within the menu for that program.

If you manually backed up the files, like with a cut and paste or copy command from a C:\ prompt, and even if in done in Explorer with a copy to the backup hard drive, it should be simple.

If the latter, plug in your hard drive. Open explorer and go to your directory with the files you want to backup, sort the list based on date, highlight the files and copy them to the back up drive into the directory so they are added with the files previously backed up.  You could also just copy the same directories to the same destination used earlier but this will prompt you to overwrite or replace or skip the existing files.

If the former, check your software for its update function so you can determine how to identify the new files and then add them to the previously backup files.
