I found that two of my vacuum caps were cracked so I bought some new ones and installed them... After installing them I start her up and get her close to running temp. as I twist the throttle some I hear a crack and the grip slides off in my hand..... what the heck...  tickedoff

I was planning an after lunch ride to see if the vacuum plug replacement solved my hesistation at roll on throttle and now I have to put the grip back on....

Um, how do you do that?   ???
And I am planning on changing bars back to stock in the next couple weeks, thought I should add that since I dont know if I will need to pull it off for that. I am planning on just swapping everything over from the existing bars.

And one side question. Last week after going for a ride I adjusted the idle speed from the 1000 it has been on since I got it down 100 to 900. rode it afterward and it maintained the 900 idle speed. Now that I replace the two caps it idles lower by a couple hundred rpm's, is it logical that with the leak before versus no leak now, that accounts for the idle speed being diffrent? (I know exactly where it was so no problem to put it back after a warm up ride)...

John, in a word....yes. A vacuum leak will cause that, just turn the idle adjustment back up a tad.

Super glue gel is what comes with the aftermarket grips, try that, worked okay for me. Just make sure to put the grip on quickly without hesitation because the glue will set almost immediately when the grip stops moving! cooldude

It's the "crack" that bothers me.  Did the throttle sleeve break or are you really just talking about the rubber portion of the grip coming off?  If it's just the grip it's no big deal.  If the plastic throttle sleeve broke off you'll need to obtain a replacement.

The good news is that even if the throttle sleeve broke, it's common to a lot of the Hondas.

Honda sells it as an assembly with the grip on it.  I'm with Willow.  If you really heard a crack order a new one.

The crack was the glue releasing. it looks like there is evidence of two past "glue events" on the plastic throttle shaft. the grips are the rubber and chrome kura~~~n ones

I ran the bike for a god while after the grip came off and the throttle responded fine so I think I will just glue it back... I searched the web and saw several refrences to double sided tape and even hair spray, lol...

as for the whole assembly, it should just unbolt from my bars and go right on the new to me stock ones, right?

Indeed it should assuming they're both 1 inch bars.

Hair spray will work.  I would consider it for the left side, but on the throttle side I'd go with some good glue, perhaps specifically grip glue or Gorilla glue.

Yes Willow, both 1" bars.....

How much space do I need to leave between the edge of the chrome grip and the throttle housing considering that at some point I would like to put a throttle lock on her?

I second using a glue that other members have vouched for or grip glue. I had a 81 GS750L and the grips came loose on it. I used that yellow weatherstrip adhesive...lots of fun. Every time I'd get on it hard, the grips would slowly start to slide off.

Made it feel real fast, kinda like your arms were stretching out. uglystupid2
