HD road king handle bar

Hi to all,

I have a 2002 standard, and was wondering have anyone install HD road king handle bar on the Valk? The current stock bar fits ok, but it's a bit too wide, I sat on one of my riding buddy's road king and felt very comfortable on the width of the bar. I seem some used HD road king handle bar for sell and was wondering what I should look for if I decide to buy one.

1st thing I'd do is mic your handlebars and then mic the HD.

It runs in my mind the HD's are smaller in diameter.

I haven't owned a HD since 1997, so they could have came out with 2" bars.

I have a set of 'Wild1 Chubbies', made for the HD Road King (WO518RK), on my Valk.  They are 1 1/4" thick, but necked down to 1", and fit the controls and clamp just fine.

The bars are 1 1/4" thick (the 'chubby' part), and are 1" at the riser clamp, and the bar ends...  Just in front of the Masters, is where the 1 1/4" part starts.  Everything just slides on

Seems as long as they are 1" diameter it should work. Or at least 1" at the clamps and ends, as Black Dogs is.

I've done the exact thing you're talking about but with a set of Suzuki Volusia bars.
I rode a C50 (Volusia) for a few years before I got the Valk and I guess I got used to the hand position.  The Valks bars killed my wrists on a long ride.
Not sure how the HDs are but I needed to drill a couple of holes for the alignment tabs where the start/signal controls mounted. Not a major thing though.

I think you'll find most oversize bars reduce down to 1" at the center clamp and where the controls mount. I have a similar setup from Wild 1, worked fine with OEM until I switched to HD controls. Even those are for 1" bars.

Using the Flanders Handlbars site (below), you can closely compare the Height, Width, Pullback, Center, Clamp Area measurements with the valk bars. (Remember the IS bars are a quarter inch narrower than std/tourer bars (1/8" each side)). And the valk OE risers are 3 1/8" tall, or whatever you have on your bike.

I went thru this years back trying to get a better handlebar (and riser) fit, but quit.  As I recall  a couple of the Harley bars (Heritage and road King) were close enough to be worth looking at.  Do not forget to factor in your risers (or proposed risers) together with the handlebar dimensions when trying to determine where you want your hands (as well as the possibility of having to change some cables/hoses)

Thanks to all the valuable information, I think the HD road king custom will probably fit me the best. Ride safe....Btw any good Valk mechanic in souther California that can be recommended?
