The Twilight Zone

« on: May 03, 2012, 06:31:28 PM »

Just in the past few days they were showing hail storms shattering windshields on tv. I have been through some strong storms and lucky no hail. We get golf ball size hail here sometimes and began to wonder how many of ya'll run into some heavy hail on the bike.

Man to shatter a windshield -would sure hurt a noggin without a brain bucket!  Grin

Twice, last year.
Sure Appreciated the leathers & helmet that day...
It was in the painted dessert national park with no available cover.
Cleared up, then got us again a little later. Rained 16 out of 19 days that trip; rained in 8 states including So. Cal. (Don't believe the song).
 Tongue

Then there was the snow & ice near Loveland Pass, CO in '09... Another story.
I guess if your gonna ride long distance, you're gonna find some weather.

A rough day on the road is still better than a good day a work. Cheesy

I hit a bird once and a june bug, does that count?
I couldn't even imagine riding thru anything bigger than marble sized hail on a cycle, no way!
Golf ball sized hail would surely knock me off the cycle (I think?)

Never one bad enough to injure me or the scooter from the impacts. I got in one riding home from work once that covered the road and it was cursed slick. Had to slow way down, all the cagers I'd been passing eventually caught up with me and I motioned them around.

On I70 in Kansas a couple years back, made it to an overpass just in time.  Three minutes and it was over. Not the first time I've used an overpass for shelter. Usually for severe winds and rain.  First time I had hail included though. Hoser  Shocked

Was in Sturgis in '09 for the Motor Classic, was supposed to leave Saturday morning, but the rest of our crew changed our plans to leave Friday morning.

Friday afternoon a hellacious hail storm came through - baseball sized hail - damaged bikes, buildings, cars, people, you name it.

When I purchased the Valk I rode it home 270 miles. The last 60 miles were the scariest I've ever experienced.  Embarrassed
I thought the helmet was going to explode. Hail was coming down as a Dragon's breath!! Undecided
Visibility was 'bout 4-5 feet! Undecided

Back in '86 the first time it happened, we were  driving from New York to Los Angeles. When we got to Springfield, Mo, all hell broke loose.  Shocked
Hail, buckets of water and an electrical storm bouncing off the ground! We pulled over and cuddled ourselves up on the front seat. Shocked Cry Evil

We were driving a '69 Chevelle (American Iron... all metal). Very scarry.  Embarrassed Evil Angry

WOW! Now that was a storm!! Looked like that baseball size hail really did some serious damage. A least ya'll weren't on the bike at the time with nowhere to hide under----that would be a nightmare! That little girl with a knot on her head needed a helmet!  Grin

Years ago when the spousal unit and I were riding Skyline Drive we saw a storm comming and thought it better to get off the mountain, while trying to get into the lowlands the storm caught us and dumped quarter size and golf ball size hail on us, open face helmet, no gloves, no place to hide, by the time it was done my nose was broke and two knuckles on my right hand. Luckily the wife listened when I told her to put her head in my back and do not look up, she only had a few bruises. One of the worst things I ever rode in, the worst part was still  having to ride 200 miles to get home.

We left that Thurs for home. We were going into MT but the storm was brewing up there. So we headed east. We saw that on the news and glad we missed it. I think Valkhound was still in Sturgis when that one hit.

Last yr at Sturgis. It was 80 and sunny. Rain started as I was making a beer run into Sturgis. For 2 miles everyone was pulled over. 'Bunch of p***y's!' Then I thought this rain hurts, no lid on. Oh crap its hail! I stopped and covered the bike as it hit. Nickle size. I had to put my sock cap on and get under the bike cover. Did this for 5 min all while the sun was out and sprinkling.  Shocked

2010 in Deadwood they had a big storm. Hail whipped out the Iron Horse bar. Hail was up to the top of the bar. These pix are 3 days after the storm.  Shocked

Lotta good youtube stuff on Sturgis/Deadwood/So Dakota hail.

I got caught in pea to grape sized hail on Alberta Hwy. 22 west of Granum.  I was wearing full leathers covered by a rain suit and the hail was still hurting my arms and hands such that I was expecting bruises (I was not bruised).  I pulled over when the relatively heavy car traffic was unable to keep the tire tracks clear of hail.  Parked the Valk on the shoulder with four-ways on and walked down to the ditch in case someone hit the bike due to poor visibility and traction.  I was surprised that the tank and fenders were not damaged.

Heh heh...yep. And once you look up into something like that it's hard to look away.

I was wearing a helmet and leathers. Looking up was the only way to keep the impacts off my the back of my neck. I'm not sure when the face-shield left...first I realized was when I tasted blood (ugh).

I had other significant injuries as well...severe bruising mostly...but I can tell you, the way to relieve pain of pretty much any kind is to take a large hailstone to the nose! Didn't feel anything but that afterwards!
