A short while back Phil57 asked about the progress of a 97 Valk that I procurred and decided that it was not worth restoring as there were too many missing and broken parts.

This is what I started with

As I started to tear it apart I was quite surprised at the amount of parts that needed to be replaced because they were missing. I decided to build some parts and modify others, even the aftermarket accessories. I wanted to keep it light and simple.

To do the project I needed money. I sold parts that I removed that were not going to be used (wheels, fender struts, exhaust covers, and other parts from previous projects). I had a set of wheels from a 98 that were virtually perfect and a new set of Metzlers,...the wheels were powdercoated, new bearings installed, the Metzlers, Patchboy schrader valves and Dyna Beads completed project.

I had the forks checked for straightness and rebuilt, then coated the lower fork castings. The swingarm was stripped and repainted, the pumpkin,  pinion cup. driveshaft, and slines were cleaned and inspected for wear. All was OK, so it was properly lubed and reassembled.

Did a complete Desmog. Then took the OEM exhaust and cut it up as if to do a glasspack mod but without the glasspack. Instead I used a 1 3/8" tube approx 10" long. I then had all the exhaust parts sand blasted and painted with Rustoleum BBQ paint (including the 18" stacks that were stuck on the OEM system).
Assembled on to the bike and added a pair of Grumpys tips.

The pilot jets were found to be clogged, so I relaced them with #38s from DG Performance (much cheaper than OEM jets from Honda), and bowl gaskets and pilot air screw o-rings & washers from RedEye Tech. The airbox was damaged so Pinwall sold me a good airbox for $10.00 and it had a K&N filter in it. Cleaned and oiled the filter, installed the airbox with the filter

Thursday I had the gas tank media blasted and today it went to my favorite body shop for dent removal and primer.

Here are a few "teaser" pictures:

George...  I'm moppin' the drool off my keyboard.

Daymn, that is gonna be sweet!  You gonna have it ready for InZane?  I have it on good authority that Mr. Wizzard (Daryl, from XF6/VTXTREEME fame), is building himself something of a radical project, based on the Valk  Wink  Maybe there could be a bit of a 'Bike Build-Off', if you two wanna lock horns...

Keep the updates coming  cooldude

Hey George, ya got my attention with that exhaust system. But I don't quite follow you when I read your post then look at the picture. Got any more info on it, is there any muffling done at all because it sure doesn't look like it. I couldn't use it around town but might be fun to build a set with the pipes I just picked up. The project looks good thus far, keep us posted....and maybe a sound byte when you're done.  Cheesy

John
The exhaust system was cut 3" from the start of the collector and we added two small lengths of pipe to try and equalize the pipe lengths. We then welded a SS 4" to 1" cone on to the collector, then a 1 3/8" length of SS tubing 10 inches long. Since it came with 18" long stacks, they were used to bring the exhaust to just past the axel. The whole system was sandblasted (it was rusty) and coated with Rustoleum BBQ paint, and I got a set of Grumpys smooth trim rings for a bit of a finished look.

Yes it will be loud, but i'm sure unbaffled Cobras will be far louder. And it will fit the spirit and attitude of a bobber.

As I stated in October, it will be have a steathy, neo-industrial, post apocalyptical look. Sort of an Excile Cycles vibe.

Satin black paint, all non-painted parts will have a brushed metal finish, and the only chrome will be a few fasteners on the motor. My powdercoater is reserveing an entire day just for all the parts that are going to get a satin black coating.

My current mantra is: Dechrome, Keep it simple, Keep it inexpensive, Attitude is everthing

Thanks for all the positive comments. Smiley

I'm building this bike "on a wing and a prayer",....that is I started on a very strict budget (virtually no money) and sold parts off the original bike, other used and extra parts. I've traded parts for others, and made and modified others.

I currently have more in my "special savings account" than when I started this project bike. So I guess you can say, "I'm in the BLACK."

Oh, forgot to mention,.....any and all chrome parts are going off to the powdercoaters for a coat of "SATIN BLACK".

Wow!  I just saw this post and the project looks great.  I've been wanting to do the same thing for quite a while now.  I have an '03 Standard that I have been dying to de-chrome and bob.  I hope you make it to Inzane with this beauty!  I would love to see more.

Great work!

Started the bobber for the first time today!!!!

It's been a long time coming, as there have been soooo many parts issues (lost and wrongly ordered parts).
Didn't want to buy a battery until all the wring issues were sorted and all the motor parts were at a point where I felt ready to fire her up. The oil that was in the bike looked clean and it had an STP oil filter (that sorta gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling).

Had a problem with my old Craftsman battery charger that took about two days to realize. Hooked up one of my Battery Tenders over night and it turned over! Put two gallans of unleaded regular, turned the Pingell to reserve, put the choke to halfway and tried to start it. Tried several times and heard a little "pop".

Hearing a "pop" meant that there was a fuel delivery issue. So I tried to start it again but I held the throttle about 1/3 open,.....and it started!!!!

It would not idle (with or without the choke on), that meant only one thing. The idle was not set right, so after a short warm up period I adusted the idle so that it ran properly (by ear, as there is no tachometer).

OK, it is loud!!! Not as loud as TBR or unbaffled Cobras, but defineately louder than my I/S with Dragonpacks or my Rat Rod with baffled Cobras.

I'm a happy man now, but it is short lived as I removed the valve covers, cam end cover and the timing belt cover, and other various other "chrome" parts to go to the powdercoaters for a coat of satin black (gauranteed 24 hour turnaround).

My goal is to have the bike licensed, insured and ready to ride by Friday.
