Hey I've read some post about the dreaded hydro-lock and now I'm wondering if I should be thinkingabout replacing my petcock as a precautionary step.

You can learn how to test your petcock so you'll know it is OK...

Does it go to reserve properly?

Does your bike run out of gas after a mile or two if you put the
petcock on "off"?

There's a rebuild kit ("cover set") you can get for $35 or so (around $50 if you get a new
in-tank filter), here's one of many articles on rebuilding the petcock:

http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/petcock.htm

There's a good vacuum test in the article.

You'll get about 5,000  Roll Eyes hits filled with pictures and the thoughts of other
members if you search for petcock on this board, tons of good information... you
are right to worry about it, there's a lot of true stories out there about hydrolocked
motors, I've seen one myself...

Yes it'll run out if I leave it off.0Havpe been shutting it off after rides and sometimes forget until it starts to stutter crazy2 It seems to function normally,However, having read post of "hydrolock" I'm beginning to think that I should rebuild or replace as a matter of prevention. It's a 2000 with 64,000 on it.
thanks

Shutting off the gas flow while riding is not a thorough test.

It only takes a few drops a minute to cause a hydrolock situation and using that test will not reveal a small dripping.

The only way to test would be to remove the gas line and observe the results.

My 98 Tourer developed a problem with about 75k miles.  The diaphragm had a tear that leaked gas down the vacuum line into #6 cylinder. The spark plug would foul. I ordered a rebuild kit and while waiting for the mail the link below was posted.
Most of my bikes had manual petcocks so I did the same
thing to this one as a trial. My parts were in the mail that gave me a back-up plan.
The link below shows the conversion on a similar petcock.
This is the method I  used. Looking through my files I ordered the cover set (about $25) in March 2010. I'm still using the manual set-up with no problems.
It must be turned OFF when not in use.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Just went with a pingle valve after 60K.  Had already done 2 OEM rebuilds and wasn't about to do a third.  Everyone of the diaphrams in the OEM valves developed holes over time causing a loss of vacuum.  It must have been Friday in the engineering dept. at Honda when they were designing fuel valves.  Pingle makes a supperior product.  Just make sure you get in a habit of switching off the pingle valve since it doesn't require a vacuum.

Capn Ron
Which pingel valve and was it a staght fit, other than the lack of vacuum tubing? I briefly looked at their site and saw that they also sell an electrically operated valve too.

I think these are the two, one vacuum and one manual. I think I'm in the minority with a vacuum model but I like it fine. I paid $176.99 from Dennis Kirk on 4/15/11.
The info from the receipt says; 1311-CHV, (Chrome, Hex, Vacuum).
