I decided to give the bike an oil change while I had it partially tore apart to replaced the shock bushings. My question is this with a oil and filter change (factory honda oil filter) exactly how much does it hold and what is the proper technique for checking the oil. Do I thread the dipstick all the way back in or just set it on top to get the correct reading. Right now I have roughly (give or take a little) 3 3/4 Qts. in the bike and if I check it standing straight up with it screwed in the oil is right at the full mark. It shows as it's low if I just sit it on top of the case.
My old honda's.....the cbr and the vtx take something like 3.8 Qts with a filter change and I don't want to overfill the bike and have problems later.

If you tip the bike to the right [ I set a stand under the engine guard] and slightly raise the front you can more old oil out of it..

100% right on. I also use 3.9 qts. and is ONLY 4-5 ounces shy of the 4th quart left over when done. Always has been that way using stock sized filter, not elongated oil filter taking a few more ounces. Unscrewed dipstick just resting on the top bike level is right at upper mark of dipstick being full. I say you are a few ounces shy of being full, could use some more oil, not much though. Add 2-3 ounces more and then re-check. My guess could use 3-4 ounces more but don't overfill.

On an oil change, I drain, pour in 3.9 qt, actually 4.0 qt, start engine, run till oil light goes out, shut down and go drink a bubbly bottle.
Come back, stand the old girl up straight, take the oil cap out, wipe clean, drop in and pull back out. It should be right at or just a tad over the full mark.
Have done that for 242K miles and no harm.
Ya run the engine to fill the oil filter. Then check the level.
If ya really want to know the truth, I drop the oil, change the filter, put in 4.0 qt, fire MGM up, either go for a ride or stick him back in his hole. Only to forget about the oil until net oil change. MGM no use oil, so why screw around checking it all the time.

Since the concern was raised of having too much oil in the engine.....
What would happen if I accidentally put 5 quarts of Oil in the bike?
Often the additive people (DuraLube, Slik50 and the like) just say add it to your crank case.
Anyone know for sure what happens in an overfill situation? I don't.
Cheers,
Glenn

If there is too much oil in some engines the crank will hit/whip the oil into a foam.. Oil pumps and bearings don't get along well when being feed foam..

A friend of mine changed his oil. He thought he bought a 4qt jug but it was 4liter. That difference is less than a quart yet he had a drip after every ride out the crankcase vent. Not sure if it came out of the dragon drool tube or what but he said there was a silver dollar sized puddle after every ride on his garage floor till he figured what the mistake was

Thanks for all the quick reply's. I added a little more oil to the old girl and checked it standing straight up without screwing in the dipstick and it's right on the money Think she's good to go for another 5K miles. Dragon Slayer 129

I drain it for a long time.......put 4qts in (but I dont try hard to get every drop) so after 4 bottles theres close to .1 that doesnt make it in the bike.
I check the oil every day before I ride, yes, every day I look under the bike and if theres no oil, then I assume its all still inside. 5,000 miles later I drain it and fill it and make sure I didnt spill any on the floor (my oil checking devise)

I would not put in an additive, it may have friction modifiers, and is NOT for wet sump motorcycles. Hard on your wet clutch. Hoser JMHO
