I'm about to tear into my clutch on my 1999 Interstate. Doing research and reading the service manual. I have one question. Is it necessary to remove the clutch basket? Or is it easier to remove the basket and use it as a temporary alignment tool for the plates? Or do I simply line up the plates in a stack, secure the stack then install into the basket?

No need to remove the basket unless its damaged.
I use a a rig like this to hold tension on the plates, then I put it into the basket to line them up good with less tension. Then I go back and install the spring. If they aren't lined up well its a bear to reinstall.

Here's a video of the clutch going into the outer.  i did the same thing as Jeff k and used the 1/4 pipe couplers.

I've also got some other vids I was going to link up as a tutorial.  Mine went back together last thursday.

Good luck.
