I'm on the hunt for a final drive  for my '97 standard (any help appreciated).
Brother Mrider has some feelers out but was told that the '97 differs from subsequent years.  Anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks. FM

Hi Mike!  There are no internal differences from year to year.

Well, there are some minor differences......in 2001 they made the final drives polished and clear coated instead of painted on the standard and touer.  However, there is no problem interchanging a painted (older one) for a polished (newer one) They all fit and work just the same.

I have a good final drive on my bike, but it isn't cosmetically perfect on the outside.

I saw a nice clear-coated one at BMDR this weekend.

And I've looked closely at nice painted ones...

The painted ones look just like the painted parts of the engine, the clear coated
ones look like shiny aluminum.

Unblemished beats blemished, either way, don't know if I like one more than the other...

Doesn't matter to me as long as the driven gear is passable. I can pretty one up enough to do what I need it to do.

I think pretty much all the good pumpkins are already sold and installed on Valkyries.

What's left is the worn out drives that need to be rebuilt.

If your interested in buying a worn out drive, give me a PM.

Don't give up. I've seen awesome ones go by (for $400+) on eBay recently...

I have a nearly new drive unit and driveshaft.
But before I'd sell it, you'd need to make me one hell of an offer for it.

Depending on what you need to rebuild it, I just ordered new crown and pinion gears from cheapcycleparts for $245, and iirk the drive flange is $170.

Thanks for the tip.  That's direction I'd like to go if I can afford the labor.

If this one on ebay is being sold by Sun Coast Cycle Sports, stay away from it. This is the one I purchased and cleaned up to find the splines shot. I returned it stating that the seller had misrepresented the part and then went thru PayPal after many weeks to receive a full refund. Stay clear of this seller.

As for cosmetics of the final drive, as long as it is prep correctly you can paint it any color you choose.  I painted mine with Honda black and cleared it years ago.

I painted a starter once, it looked like new...
