Got between 25 and 27 mpg on my recent trip to key West. Took my windshield off (put it in my friends trailer) it made no difference. We were moving between 80/90. Got over 40mpg in the smokies put put ing all day. I've done the manual petcock thing several years ago with the jb weld that was mentioned here. Never had a problem with it since

WHAT?? JB weld, petcock???   Undecided

Btw, I have got about 38 in the mountains just putting along. Smiley

On my 97 standard: running factory jets, piggies cut and first baffle drilled, K&N with prefilter, 6 degree trigger wheel and regular gas I got 40.7 mpg's running 75 most of the trip. I have been adding about 1oz. Startron fuel enzyme with each fill up when I arrive at home. No pinging noticed.

And yes running a manual pingel with in line fuel filter. I did extend the pipe but never plan to hit reserve as I zero the trip odometer at each fill up. After having issues with the original OEM valve leaking by I now check the shut off capability of the pingel as part of my winter maintenance routine. So far no issues and no starvation of fuel. This winter the fuel filter will be replaced. It will probably go on the lawn tractor.

this is the trick I've used to fix my petcock when it was giving me fits.. I used j.b weld to seal off the holes. I hope it lasts forever. It's been a few years since I've done it. I put some gas friendly gasket holder stuff around the groove to help the old gasket a little and jb'd the vacuum holes. I let the jb weld cure 24 hours just to play it safe.  http://daughertymotorsports.com/howto/Tankvalve/tankvalve.html

April 2010 my petcock started leaking fuel down the vacuum line fouling the spark plug. Ordered the rebuild kit and at the same time the link Mildew used was posted. Had manual petcocks on all of my bikes so I converted the failing one.
The kit is unopened and I'm still using the converted valve.

Yeah, as long as your used to shutting off the fuel every time their shouldn't be any problem. I give mine a little wiggle in the groove for the off position just to be somewhat sure the valve isn't on a bind. If you ever forget to shut it off,  you can roll your bike in gear. If it rolls,  it's safe to hit the starter. It won't roll an inch if it's locked.
