12 volt fuse size?
«

I installed a 12 volt cigarette receptacle on the bike, awhile ago. I occasionally blow the 15 amp fuses, I don't know why, can't seem to find a short anywhere. I want to use the receptacle to charge cell phone and GPS. I ran out of the 15 amp fuses and popped a 25 amp in there. It has not blown yet. Is that amperage too high? Are the cell, and GPS units curcuit proitected anyway, by the chargers? What would be the downside to using the larger fuse?

I want to say that a cigarette receptacle is usually on 30 amp circuit. I'm guessing the GPS and cell phone charge cords also offer a redundant protection. Call the manufacture of both these devices and find out what they say to be certain.

Unless your running an air compressor or something that takes a lot of juice the 15 amp should have been plenty. My GPS and cell phone charger both have a very small fuse ( five amps or less) in the plug end of cord. Most of those thing only take about 4 volt or less to charge.

Either your socket is defective or you've wired it incorrectly. My GPS takes a 3 amp fuse and a cell charger should be similar. Maybe a pinched wire.

When are you blowing these 15 amp fuses? Is it when the compressor is running....or just your cell phone, ect?
If you're blowing 15 amp fuses with your cell phone plugged in, you've got problems. If it's when the a/c is running, then you need to find out what the current draw is for that device and fuse it accordingly.
If you have your cell phone fused at 15 amps, you virtually have no protection for that device. Most likely, your phone will burn up and cause problems elswhere (flaming cell phone of death?) long before it blows a 15 amp fuse.
You might want to consider mounting/installing a second 12vdc outlet.
Better yet, just take the seat off and clip the compressor straight to battery. Crank the bike up, fire up the compressor, fill up tires, disconnect compressor from battery......go your merry way no worse for the wear. I wouldn't keep using that assesory plug for the air compressor. Fuse it at 5 amps and just plug your cell phone/gps in it.

If you are using the cigarette lighter for it's intended purpose, you need the 25 0r 30 amp fuse. Perfectly normal. You will see your volt meter nosedive also, if you are lighting up. Hoser
