Friday morning met with Steve - Wing

and Mark -ST

Rode cross country to get on the BRP at Asheville, NC to ride to Marion, Virginia.

Some photos on the fly whilst on the BRP

Ariived at motel, checked in, unpacked and found the "Alternator Gang" in the parking lot.

This is the second alternator death I have witnessed in the last 2 weeks.

I advise youse guys with high mileage to either do some alternator maintenace or to start carrying one AND have the knowledge to fix it on the side of the road.

Friday night dinner/supper was in the restaurant inside the motel.

A buffett had been set up for us.  cooldude

The drinks were served poolside.

Friday morning we left before the main group but followed the group route.

We told Bob we were the group and he looked like this

Then I told him we were about 30 minutes ahead of the large group and he looked like this

He's a great guy trying to revive the local store in Thompson Valley.

We got into War and I took us off route

Got on this road

which lopped south to bring us back onto the road to War. We came across a doe and fawn on the road. The doe easily bounced up the steep rocks to the right, to the left was a crash rail and a steep drop off.. A car came towards us which scared the fawn. It lay prone in the gutter with its front legs over its ears trying to shrink into the earth.

We rode slowly by and hopefuly it's mum got it safely off the road. When you see them like that they are beautiful. When you see them at speed they are terrible.

Back in War we spent a coupla minutes absorbing the local flavor

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War,_West_Virginia

North of War I was looking for Berwind Lake State Park looking for the road that cut across a mountain. Fingers crossed it was paved.

Eventually we found the right road to the park passing these steps on the way.

That's Dan Ferrentino on the Valkyrie

Steve

Mark

The road ended in dirt. Oh well.

I got us off route again and we rode through Filbert W VA. There wasn't a human being to be seen until we got right to the other end of town where there was a guy with a blue tarpaulin. it was like an episode of "The Twillight Zone".

The only street in town was VERY narrow.

http://www.coalcampusa.com/sowv/flattop/filbert/filbert.htm

The road ended here so we had to ride back past the blue tarpaulin man and still we didn't see one other person.

On to the lunch stop in Pocohontas, the location of the annual Roadkill Cooking Festival.

http://pccocwv.com/roadkill_cookoff_and_festival.html

Pocohontas looked like a bomb had destroyed downtown, what there was of it.

Lunch had been prepared by the local food bank and was served in the cafeteria of the local high school.

Don and Tracy - two of the ride organizers

Lunch was very tasty. All home cooked.

Steve and Dan practising their woodcraft skills

After a short ride down the road the Pocohontas mine tour was next on the schedule

Too many people so we headed off to Burkes Garden, VA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burke's_Garden,_Virginia

We rode the loop and stopped on the river bridge

Upstream

Downstream

Local

Then back to the motel in Marion.

I've been past this house quite a few times over the years and it never seems to look any worse.

The rest of the day passed uneventfully and the ride home was wet, damp and rainy in parts.

It will fall down as soon as the roof isn't water-tight. The roof looks pretty good...

Beautiful pictures and thanks for sharing, along with the narration!   cooldude

Britman you said that was the 2nd alternator in the last 2 weeks. Is there a certain mileage we need to check or replace?

I don't know.

That's a question for the Tech board I think.

Steamer would of made a better picture if it would of been his back side.

Howdy Stanley, it don't look like you have change one Eye-Oh-Ta.

You guys have some damn good places to ride.      I love to ride in the Virginia-W Virginia dirt mounds.

1st time I got on the BRP, it was getting to be late afternoon.    Never been on it prior to this, started looking for a Motel when we 1st got up on it.     The 3 kids all laid down in the back end of the station wagon and went to sleep.   Wife and I alternated driving as we were pooped.   I think it was like 5:00 AM when we found a Motel, the owner let us sleep till 3:00 PM no charge.      When we left, I left $20 in an envelope for the owner. Room rate then was $29.00.   Got off the BRP and started traveling some side roads........      The next time I run it, I started at my normal leave time of 7:00 AMish on the South end and at noon we pulled off, and started looking for a Motel..........   Loved that road once I figured it out.   Hated the Speed Limit however.

Thanks Paul for the pictures.  Was great to hook up and ride for the weekend.

Thanks Duffy.  Yeah, I do show up occasionally, especially the smaller events.  Wish I was closer to you folks down in GA, NC and TN because it would be nice to ride together more.
