Thanks Al.

A time I will never forget sitting in the local movie theater in Doylestown Pa. seeing Buillitt for the first time.  Still the best car chase in my honest opinion.  A Charger R/T vs. a bad boy Mustang...what could be better.  When those cars were getting air hopping the streets in San Francisco my stomach was in the back seat with them.

Steve McQueen just oozed cool.  One of my favorite movies.

Anybody got specific info on the motors in those cars I'd love to know.

Charger could have been sporting anything from the 383 up to the 440 Magnum while I think the Mustang was running a 390.

Thumper the 1st Time I saw Bullit was a free showing of it at our HIGH SCHOOL Auditorium in Clinton Tennessee.

They stopped classes for the Juniors and seniors and we watched Bullitt,

Strangest and best time for me in High School.

To this day I will never know why they did that for us.

But I am glad they did.

I was driving a Torino Ford at the time, 351 Cleveland Four Barrel , factory duals and a fast back that car was fast but I was beaten up at a

drag race by a Plymouth Road Runner, 383 Hemi of course.

One of the best movies of all time...

I agree that the Mustang was running a 390 (I think) and I think I remember reading the Charger was running a 440 Magnum.

Big All, it couldn't have been a 383 Hemi (no such thing).  The Hemi's that were put in Road Runners were all 426 ci.  Maybe there was an old Hemi that was 383 ci (like a Red Ram or something like that), but not put into a Road Runner.

383 Road Runners were not that fast (if stock) but the Hemi's and 440's ran really good.

Charged R/T's came with a 440 magnum. Mustang never had a 390. Mustang would be 289. Later mustangs had 302/351 and others.

I disagree...see below

A pair of 1968 Ford Mustangs

1968 Ford Mustang

The 1968 Ford Mustang used the same body style as the previous year with minor trim changes. The Mustang emblem was in the middle of the grille with no horizontal or vertical bars attached to the emblem. The air scoop on the side had a cleaner look to it due to the absence of the horizontal stripes.

The 428 Cobra Jet was offered in Fords Mustang fastbacks and coupes and in Torino and Mercury Cougar and Cyclone models. Hooked up with a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. All 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jets had heavier-duty front shock towers. The mighty 1968 Ford 428 Cobra Jet was introduced on April 1, 1968. Rated at 335hp with actual hp around 410. Built with the 428 cid big-car engine, but produced with larger-valve heads and the race-brewed 427's intake manifold. Also optioned with ram-air induction and a functional hood scoop that was mated to a special air cleaner with a vacuum-actuated butterfly valve that funneled air directly into the 735-cfm Holley 4bbl carburetor.

I've always wondered what happened to the camera man when the the Charger hits the camera at about 1:06 (in the Youtube video above).  IIRC, the charger loses six hubcaps by the time it crashes at the end of the scene, much of which isn't shown in the clip.

In the spirit of Father's day having been just this passed Sunday, thanks to my father for turning me on to movies like Bullit, The Great Escape, Vanishing Point, etc.  Dad was always a Mopar guy,  so being a rebellious teenager,  that meant anything but a mopar for me.   After seeing this movie,  I knew my first car would be a mustang.  Got me a 12 yr old  1969 mustang coupe.  Loved that car.  Taught me the importance in learning to do your own wrench work...   sometimes in fun but sometimes (too often) out of necessity.
Love the scene where the mustang appears in the rearview mirror.

Thanks for posting Al.

Better check your facts on the Mustangs. They came with 390, 428, 429, 260. I believe the one in the movie was a 390, and the Charger was a 440.

You are right about the 289, (both 2 and 4 barrel) and 302 (Including HiPo in the Boss 302), and the 351.
