I had a new Avon Cobra front tire mounted a few months back aired up to usuall 40 lbs. and I noticed that it was a noisey tire compared to the Old Avon Venom tire I had before , sounds like an off road tire .... for awhile I just thought it was just the aggressive asphalt top layer we have here in the Texas Hill Country and the different tread design causing the noise ... BUT its still noisey after this weekend ... Has anybody had this noise problem with the new Avon front tire ?? Thanks the Geezer

Geezer, I have not noticed what your describing. My Avon Cobras probably have a couple of thousand miles on them now. I wonder if your tire has an imperfection that results in the road noise your experiencing?

Hey Salty , anything is possible I guess like a bad batch .... I bought the tire from Jake Wilson , and I'll just give those guys a call tomorrow to see if anyone else has complaints about road noise with the Avon Cobra 's .... they proably refer me to Avon where I'll have all the tire info for them ... Thanks the Geezer

For all this is worth. Ive found too high a psi has caused road noises with quite a few front tires Ive used on many bikes. Whats the min and max psi for your tire?? 40 psi for an unloaded tire might be too high. I was looking back at old literature for the 1500 and the original tires called for 33 psi front and rear??? I thought and still think thats low.

I think highly of the Jake Wilson folk, hopefully they can help resolve your problem. JaysGone raises a good point, you might want to run your front at 38 psi and see what you think. The original recommendation from Honda to inflate to 33 psi is way to low IMO. I have my front inflated at 38 and rear at 41 psi, respectively.

I actually run mine pretty low. With both bikes. Rears on the front at 30 psi cold...34 psi hot. LT on the rear at 32 cold, 36 hot. I check them daily. I look them over before I leave for any cuts, nails etc. I check the psi weekly as I commute on my bikes 300+ days a year.

I'm on my 2nd set of Cobras. I haven't experienced excessive noise from them. I run 42F and 46R with no problems. My rear has 16K on it and no sign of wearing out yet. I got 25K out of the front. When I had the new front mounted a few months ago, the dealer noted I had no cupping which he see's regularly.

I just put 1500 miles on my new tires the last couple of weeks on a ride through New England. Bought an Avon Cobra front from Jake Wilson and started at 40 psi to break it in. A bit firmer than I like, but did not notice any increase in road noise. Lowered to 38 psi now and we'll try that for a little while before lowering to 36 psi - looking for that sweet spot.
At the same time this spring, I put on an Austone Taxi tire on the rear running that at 40 psi. No noticable change in characteristics from a mc tire. I'm not an aggressive peg dragger, but enjoy a spirited run through the twisties and did my best to break these tires in right. This combination is working out well for me so far. Rider NJ

I run Metz 880 on the front at 44#, rear has a Good Year Triple Tread at 35#.
Usually tire noise comes from aggressive tread design.
Last Avon I run was a Venon or something along that name, no noise.
I would not go below 40# on the front and 45# on the rear, no matter what tire your are running, with the exception of car tires. Too high pressure in a CT will toss you around a little bit, where lower pressure the tire will go with the flow.

Thank you all for your input , right now with it being a TAD WARM here in Texas right now , I've been running the front tire cold at 38 lbs. because with the heat , it will heat up to 44 lbs. easy but I'm also thinking about lowering the pressure to 36 lbs. cold and see if it gets up to 40 lbs. hot where I like it ... I like running my front tire at 40 lbs. year around and with the C/T I run around 34 lbs. solo & 36 lbs. with the wifey and I try not to let the rear tire get past 40 lbs. hot because its too bumpy for the wifes back after a while ... I remember when I just bougt my Valk and the Honda book said to air up the front tire to 33 lbs. and 36 lbs. for the rear , HUMBUG !!! I wound up cupping my almost new front tire in no time & it felt mushy in the rear ..... SOOO I listened to what everybody was running at on the VRCC web site and I've been happy since with the mileage on tires .... Thanks the Geezer

I have Cobras front and rear, the front makes noise as soon as any lean is introduced, you can hear the sipes or grooves on the road, but not when srtaight up. No wear problems at all, 38 front, 40 rear.

Several sets of Avon Cobras from JakeWilson. with Cobra 6into6 exhaust and earplugs everytime I ride, I have never heard noise from the tires regardless of pressure. Must be something with having all the Cobras??

The last I looked Avon recommended 40 PSI front and rear for Cobras on a Valkyrie. That was on their website but I haven't been there in a few years, don't know if it's still there.
At 40PSI my last front lasted 19,600 miles and was well into the wearbars on one side. Mine are noisy when hitting sharp bumps but I haven't noticed other noises with them.

I've noticed road noise with the old Dunlop and the new Metz 880. 36 psi both.
And I'm hard of hearing!!

If I may ask why the low air pressure...I take it , it works for you...

Just softens up the ride for me. 3 herniated discs. I find for me at 36 psi and above. My fronts are way to bouncy. Bike front ends just dont have enough dampening for me. In a perfect world. There would be a front end with adjustable dampening at a resonable price. I might just be at some point in my life a newer GW rider some day. Just not ready yet. No crazy riding no twisties here in So.Florida. Mostly straight line riding 1 up commuting to work. I dont have a cupping issue with a rear on the front, so I vary from 30-32 cold. But every regular bike front tire Ive tried in the last 4 years, 3 different bikes. Will start to show wear around the 4K mark on the left side. So I have flipped them regardless of arrows every 4K or so. Regular bike fronts at 36-38 psi regardless of brand gone by 8-10K.
Rears on the front at low psi are fairly new to me. Less wear on a rear as a front and so far on my Roadstar 17K and still has a ton of tread. No issues at 1.7K with the Valk and a rear on the front at 30-32 psi. Noisey with a Kenda yes, but I can live with that.
Next tires might be the new Michelins. Time will tell on those if the claims are true of not. Avons??? Pricey period.
Im not adverse to using bike tires on a bike. I dont say Darksiding is for everyone. It isnt. Just works for me and my riding needs for the moment.
