Somewhere out West, Which way did I go?

« on: June 27, 2012, 10:14:11 PM »

On another gun forum I haunt, someone posted up wanting to know WHY their Google Search ("Shopping") was no longer working.  Plainly put (for those not aware of how to do so)... when you Google something you want to learn about, it brings you to a page that has pages upon pages of links related to your search parameters.  To the left are a list of tabs, ONE of which is "Shopping".  When you click onto THAT... it focuses your search to the best pricing available, as well as who that vendor is, and the link to where to buy.  Google's new policy (to go into affect July 01, 2012) is to refuse to support (within the shopping tab) anything related to GUNS, AMMO, KNIVES, and you'll no longer be able to quickly research that within Google.  Suddenly... Google, Chrome, Gmail (sadly, that will include my Smart Phone that must have a Google account to access the Android platform) won't be on my list of things to want to use.  Please pass along the content below to folks you know who own/use "Guns, ammunition, and knives".  Good ol' Free Market Capitalism needs to give 'em a good swift kick in their asses.

According to Google, the tools of our hobbies here are considered prohibited to their new policies.
The following products are not allowed on Google Shopping:

    Guns, ammunition and knives

As such, the online merchants that you support, and that provide economic legitimacy to the firearms industry, will not have a web presence. As Google is a business they have the right to do this, and also have the ability to see their error and change this course.

Google needs to hear a very strong opposition to their decision by:

    Hearing from everyone: http://support.google.com/merchants/bin/request.py?contact_type=survey
    Discontinuing use of Google services

We are a small group here, and it is imperative that if you agree that this is a problem YOU must also spread this information to others (social media, other forums, friends). Bump with additional links or feedback.

Ratdog;
How are you doing my friend?
Anyway as report in the post above the links you provided don't work.

Google, an amazing company should stay the f--k out of politics, and just do their damn jobs.

So I looked edited your links to work, they both go too the same place.  http://support.google.com/merchants/...ct_type=survey]https://www.google.com/quality_form?...&prmd=imvnszrl]http://support.google.com/merchants/...ct_type=survey

Be well my friend

Me?  Doin' ok.  Settled into the new job (nearly a year now).  Polar Bear season is ramping up for us again, we've already had at least 04 "visitors" this spring.  One of 'em had been painted with identifiying markings by USGS, and was a little stubborn, but was eventually convinced to stay on the ice and off our little island.  The arctic ocean ice should be moving by now, so we'll have open water very soon, and we'll be using boats (instead of the hovercraft) from shore.

Still have the Zestful one, but, doesn't get flogged like it used to.  LOL

Yup, I'd read about this earlier today, and did a little testing of my own. I've been a long time proponent and major fan of Google, but this is too far. Until/unless they back this silliness out I've reluctantly switched to Bing.

Forum post with some info on this:

Overall, I still believe Google is better at what they do, but that's just silly...

P.S. Another one I've been playing with if you're the really paranoid type, check out Duck Duck Go... It's a decent search, and part of their schtick is that they do NOT track you in any way:

I'm maybe being a bit dense?

If I do a regular Google search for ar-15 I get aLL the usual hits from gun delaers.

So wherein lies the problem?

Google Shopping...

It's been a service that crawls online commerce sites for things you can buy, but now anything firearm related has been censored out of it.

Search both of these sites for AR-15

http://www.google.com/shopping

http://www.bing.com/shopping

(Or P3AT Clip is what I've been using as my benchmark. 1911 Holster is another I've been using as a test.)
