I was getting confused who was helping me, who was referring to other problem, so I broke this out, trying to be succinct

Click Click Clarification
•   1997 Standard
•   15000 Well Maintained (by others) miles
•   Started fine for 400 miles I rode it
•   Rode 2up for 30 minutes other night
•   Arrived at destination, shut off bike
•   Decided to restart bike to move from gravel to concrete for sidestand
•   Push start button, only rapid clicks
•   Push start and ride back 1up 30 minutes
•   When in garage, shut down
•   Push start button,rapid clicks
•   Put on battery charger for hour, only rapid clicks
•   Put charger in JUMP mode, MAYBE engine tries to catch for nanosecond, then rapid clicks

That’s where I am.  What else should I do, what else do you need to know?

not doubting, just trying to learn...so even "jumping" the bike wouldn't work with a bad battery?

Suggestions on a baterry vendor and model#?

I would be Soooooooo happy if that was all it is!

Yuasa's good (mine is made in USA)...

A NAPA one I had seemed of good quality...

Getting a good battery from someone who can properly charge it first
is the most important...

Read the instructions that come with the battery and I guess they'll
give details about the initial charge...

Do you have a voltmeter?

What does the battery read with the key off?

What does the battery read with the key on?

What does the battery read with the engine running (after a push start)?

What does the voltage when the starter button is pressed?

You could have a bad/corroded connection or ground somewhere.

so even "jumping" the bike wouldn't work with a bad battery?

If it is simply a bad battery, you should be able to jump start the bike.

Please keep us filled in on what you find, I'm curious too.
I agree seems like jumping should do it. But not sure what kind of "jump" is on your battery charger.
Have you tried jumping with a car battery (with the car not running)?
I've seen batteries that were shorted out enough that even jumping with another car battery wouldn't do it.

Could it be possible that you have a bad/loose connection in your charger wiring/clamps to where you're not charging the battery at all?
Did you check it with a voltmeter?

First, I agree that its probably a bad battery.. But,, I would suggest removing and cleaning [ really cleaning] the battery terminals and cable ends[especially the ground at the engine near the left foot peg]..  The statement that the jumper does the same leads me to believe there is a dirty/bad connection somewhere.. Once the connections are all nice and squeaky clean and tight, if the problem continues,, replace the battery and charge it well before using..

clean up those terminals on the starter relay under the right hand side cover, had that problem a couple times in the past.  disconnect them and do it right or it won't last.Electric connection spray cleaner may work, but it will just do it again.  I usually pour baking soda water and let it dry before reconnecting.   It needs it even if a battery is the main problem.    Hoser   Smiley

Those voltages appear to be symptoms of a really bad battery.

It is amazing how many times we say "bad battery", and so many seem to be in denial.  FINALLY, they take the plunge, buy a new battery, and all is well!

True dat!! But, you know, all noobies have to learn how finicky these bikes are when it comes to battery voltage.

BUT, the deniel works both ways.
A lot of times it is the battery, however not all hard starting problems are battery issues, which most on this board seem to be stuck on.

In my hard starting case I kept hearing "bad battery, bad battery".
Although I did mention I have a new battery, and it's on a battery tender, and when attempting to start there is plenty reserve voltage on the battery, AND it doesn't help when hooked to a non-running car battery I still kept hearing "bad battery".
So I gave in, "took the plunge", spent the money for a new battery and guess what -- the problem still exsisted!

An early telltale to battery going bad is bike seems to turn over fine when
cold, but starts only as you release the starter button.
Had this happen on the IS and replaced the battery-all fixed!

Had the same thing happen on the old 1100 Shadow and the Kaw
Concours.
