Oil Dipstick Question
«
on:
July 03, 2012, 12:21:19 PM »
I was reading the manual on checking the oil, and have gotten somewhat confused. Maunal says if oil is at lower level mark on stick to add to the upper level mark on stick. I only see 2 marks on the dipstick, one being on the very end and the other kinda in the middle of the flat spot of the stick. I just changed the oil and added 4 qts with the longer purolater filter and it shows way above the upper line and at the top part of the flat part of the stick. Any thoughts appreciated.......

First off.......are you screwing in the stick (you dont to check it)
Second, are you checking it straight up verticle, how do you keep it verticle (sitting on it) wont take much off center to affect the read.
Third...If you drained it well, added a gallon, then its good to go, check it anyway you prefer and mark the stick where it is and that is where it is.
I check my oil by looking under the bike before every ride. If theres no oil on the floor then guess what, its still all in there.....5,000 miles later I drain it and it all comes out

Along with what Chris said.. Did you drain all the oil ?? Dumb question I know,, but,, it has to be asked.. Some have tried to drain with the bike still resting on the side stand,, that doesn't work.. After the oil change did you start the engine before checked the level ?? Another dumb question, but, it had to asked again.. The filter needs some oil in it.. Then the oil level can be checked while the bike is level/ straight up and the dip stick just sitting on the block and not screwed in..

Do you have the original rubber dip-stick? Some of the aftermarket
chrome ones don't have the marks in the right places.

That one in the middle you mentioned is the upper mark.
