Is the valk supposed to start in gear with the clutch pulled .
or do i have a safty switch gone out. the VTX will.

Yes, but not with the kickstand down (another switch).

same here. 2000 IS makes it kinda nerve racking if you kill it in traffic is there a switch out or is this normal ? |

Every once and a while (three or four times in the last five years) my bike thinks it is in neutral when it is not. The neutral light comes on and I mash the start button, and the bike tries to start in gear. I haven't knocked over Big Al's Harley yet, not looking forward to that day  -Mike |

the clutch lever can be worn at the contact point, the button on the switch can be worn, the bushing in the lever can be worn, the switch can be bad. it should start in gear with lever pulled.
i replaced lever and elongated slots in the switch till i had good contact, no problems since then.
ps: switch is located on the bottom side of the left grip/turn signal assy.

A lot of time its because the points in the clutch switch are oxidized. You can pull the switch off can clean them fairly easily. If you get some 400 grit or finer sand paper and cut it into a sliver, you can get it in between the points and clean them off. I do this whenever mine acts up and its good for another couple of years.

Another common cause for this is a worn pivot hole in the clutch lever, which prevents the switch from being fully depressed. Replacing the lever with new will fix this.

My neutral start switch is bad it will start when you push the button, no matter what the other switches are doing. I've gotten use to it so it don't bother me.

My 97 Tourer also starts in gear, clutch pulled, as long as kickstand is in the up position. |

I know my I/S starts in gear with clutch pulled in with kickstand up in neutral, but if I remember correctly, only once while going home I ran out of gas and had to stop and switch to reserve. It was late at night in the dark and tired, but if I remember correctly I had it in neutral with for sure kickstand DOWN when I started it up and as soon as I shifted into 1st gear and let go of clutch at same time and for sure kickstand down, the engine immediately killed. Can't remember once engine running if engine died immediately after I shifted into 1st gear or was starting to let out clutch though? Which one should the engine die once with kickstand down when start engine or shifting into 1st gear or not start at all in gear with kickstand down? Good thing this safety feature works otherwise with kickstand down moving from a stop a left hand corner could spell big trouble.
That late night dead tired I did this same thing with engine dying 3 times before I realized my kickstand was still in the down position. I think my engine killed when in reserve for gas when I went to let out the clutch in 1st gear and not when I first shifted into 1st gear 1-2 seconds before letting out the clutch. Is this normal and does in reserve make a difference?
