"Flyka"

Spokane, WA or Tucson, AZ

« on: July 04, 2012, 04:20:17 PM »

Found this bike (98 GL 1500C) last October. I've been renewing and restoring it since. Finally got the timing plate cover back from the chrome shop yesterday, the last piece I needed to take “Flyka” on her maiden voyage. I'm real pleased not only in the way the bike runs, but her restored appearance after 14 years (12 years of storage) on the Oregon coast (aluminum corrosion and rust). As the project progressed, I added other after market items to make her more comfortable for the road. In celebration of completing the project (are they ever finished?), I rode her 14 miles today for the first time. However, I'm real anxious to do 140 miles or more now. A few more bugs on the windshield and she'll be ready for this years "Guy Ride" to Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Washington. Oh by the way, I'm absolutely convinced the mileage on the speedo is correct, it's basically a new machine.  Grin  Happy Independence Day and God Bless America!  Smiley

A little Wal-Mart trinket says it all!

Actual mileage on the bike

Seems to work well. I've had it wired up for a couple of months now. Got it from Phat Performance. I liked their price too.

It is a good looking machine.  Just curious - what did it cost to get the timing cover re-chromed?

RP I was charged $200 for the timing cover redo. It was a mess with numerous places where the chrome was cracked and puckered from the salt deposits left on it. I have no idea what they found under the chrome. I guess I felt OK with the $200 charge as the new cover is about $400. They did a good job. I considered deplating the old surface and just go with a polished aluminum surface, but there is so much chrome adjacent and behind the cover it had to be chrome. I even thought of powder coating, but it just wouldn't be the same.
