I am getting a sort of knock, or snap noise that sounds like it is coming from under the front of the fuel tank when I apply the front brake in slow traffic situations.  Does this sound remotely familiar to anyone?

I do a lot of stop & go driving in traffic and I have never heard anything from my front brakes. I think I would raise the front wheel then try turning it by hand while braking. But that's just me.

I get the same thing and I also get a buzzing from the new pads rubbing on new disks. Drives me crazy.I recently replaced the slide pins in both calipers and they slide side to side easy allowing the pads to rub and buzz [vibrate].That is my only explanation.I thought my calipers were loose but no .

Wouldn't say it was normal.

Had a similar issue. Can't say it was the same one, but I had new pads installed and the pad spring on the right front brake wasn't in right, allowing the interior pad to "float" so when the brake was applied it would shoot up to the top of the caliper and make a rather loud "clank" sound that appeared to come from the fender area and at times sound like it may be something under the tank banging around. Usually sounded like something hitting the fender. Usually the sound was prevalent during slow speeds though you could hear it at high speeds if you knew what to listen for through the wind and road noise

Drove me nuts. The fender amplified the sound. It would also make the same sound when hitting moderate bumps in the road.

One day, trying to get to the bottom of this, I pushed the offending pad with my finger and the fender goes "Clank".

Realigned the spring and problem solved.

Here is the part number for the part you need to replace to cure the noise problem.

45108-ML7-922 Spring Pad

Here is a picture of the part.
