I didn't want to divert an otherwise good thread with this, but the whole "Vaccinations cause Autism" thing is a pet peeve of mine... Also a pet peeve of Penn & Teller...

(Warning, this is Penn & Teller, the language is harsh)

Vaccine scare is total crap... the study that started the revolt was long ago proven to be false and unreplicable.  The Lancet retracted the story and study, but the revolt had already taken hold.

With 1 in 88 kids having some form of Autism there is defiantly something going on.

Food additives, vaccinations etc. Autism is very prevelant even in third world countries with no vaccinations. I don't know what the answer is. I am all to aware of the cost and struggles though. I continue to hope and pray for some type of understanding/cure

I don't believe the vaccination theory either but just this morning I attended a meeting at work. One of the topics was Autism. In 1990 the rate was 1 in 10,000 children. Now it's 1 in 88. The drastic increase is alarming and being studied. Some theories are parents are having children at an older age, processed foods with more additives, and better diagnosis defining more children with it. Before we would say they had a problem without being able to place a definitive label on the problem. Nothing is proved yet.

In my humble opinion, a LARGE part of the increase in diagnosis of Autism spectrum disorders is the broadening of the definition of what is Autistic as well as increased screening for it. Growing up I was always a little different from the other kids, but was never diagnosed as anything other than, well... a little different. In my mid 30's I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome (High functioning Autism), putting me on the Autism spectrum. Were I a child now, I would have been diagnosed at a young age, but such a diagnosis just wasn't done before the 1990's or so.

Now, all kids are screened at 18 and 24 months using procedures designed specifically to spot kids on the spectrum. Such screenings just weren't done in the past.

I'm not fully discounting that more people are on the spectrum then used to be, but I firmly believe a large part of the apparent increase is that people are screened for it now, and the definition of what is Autistic has been greatly expanded from what it used to be.

research ultra-sounds and how they cause autism and other aliments.
esp. austrailia studies.

ultra-sound is low power micro waves. it vibrates the sensitive cells of the unborn baby causing them to heat up and die in any part of the body. the sensor picks up this heat and makes a picture.
isn't the money greedy medical profession wonderful.

I don't know about autism. I do know my mother-in-law got childhood polio after her childhood polio vaccination.

I have an autistic daughter.

That being said the people they put the autistic label on now compaired to 1990 has changed. Ashbergers has gone away, and they tripled the autism spectrum.

I dont think there are really more cases, i think there are more people being labeled.
