Being a project bike and having alot of issues when 1st bought. I used regular Wally World 10w-40 and probably changed the oil 4 times before it ever left my garage.
As soon as it was road worthy and on my 1st ride. I thought this is pretty noisey for a boxer 6.
Changed it out to Wally World 20W-50. All of $13 a gallon at the time. Its a whole new bike. Everything especially the tranny quieted right down.

Been using Supertech 20/50 for quite some time. I noticed that the engins seemed quiter, but difference in the tranny howl.

I've been running 5/40 Rotella for 85,000 miles. It seems quieter than 10/40 dino oil did.

I have a current post up with an engine ticking issue. I did an oil change and put in 10w-40 and the engine started ticking. I recently changed the oil again but this time put in 20w-50 and the engine has quieted down.

The thicker the oil the quieter naturally but that's not always the best. It's probably best to stick with what's recommended since it's what it was designed to run with. 5w 40 means it only is 5 weight when warm and 40 weight at start up. I use the 5w rotella just because of the zinc. It's better to have more zinc in vehicles without a catalytic converter because of the protective coating imho

Mildew--Nothing personal, but I think you have your information regarding the viscosity backwards. That would be 5wt at cold start and 40wt at operating temp.

How about in the winter? Is the 20 ok of 20w50 for cold morning start up lube? I'm running 10w40 valvoline now. Engine is quiet, seems to shift fine. Would change to 20w50 if there would be any benefit.

I a word if its really cold it isnt a good thing. I fried a valve on my 1976 Ford cranking it in 10 degree weather using 20w-50 back in the early 70s. 20w-50 is like peee soup under 30 degrees. If you must ride in the Winter and I have. Id chnage over to a 10w-40. Here in my part of Florida now its just the other way around. Its so hot its prefered by both of my bikes.
