In the stock petcock, there are two o-rings. One for the overall fuel shut-off and on for the reserve shut-off that the steel ball goes into. Are these o-rings included in the Cover Set? I do not think they are, but I thought I would ask.

1. How are these o-rings held in?

2. What keeps them from moving or falling out of the groves when you move the fuel select lever?

I DO NOT want to go to a pingle petcock. I want to keep the original setup. The diaphram is not leaking, the bike will run a couple of miles when I switch the petcock to off.

I think the reserve o-ring might be leaking. When the lever is in the on position, the steel ball is supposed to block the reserve hole via the o-ring.

When the main tank gets low, I think there is fuel being drawn past the ball and reserve o-ring and consequently I do not know that I should switch to reserve.

That side is not included in the cover set, only the vacuum side stuff.

You will continue to have problems......if you like the OEM get a new OEM....fixing is a "kicking the can down the road" kinda thing

Indybobm,   I believe I have the same problem.  My petcock went south about a year ago. Converted the stock petcock by reversing the spring.  That requires me to turn it off and turn it on manually.  No problem once you get used to turning it off and on.  My problem now is I'm not running out of fuel like I used to.  When I would switch to reserve, I would almost always get gas and get 4.0 or 4.1 gallons.  Now, sometimes I get 4.0, 4.1, and sometimes get 4.8.  I believe the o-ring is leaking past the ball.  From what I understand, you have to drill out the rivets to open that part of the petcock, find some small o-rings, put it back together with some small fasteners and your good to go.  I just got another petcock and plan on taking the old one off this winter and doing the major surgery on it. I'll probably screw it up, thats why I got the other petcock!

Those aren't standard o-rings.  It's a larger piece of rubber beneath the metal layer the ball sits on.
This I know because Stude31 and I tried to replace those "o-rings" once :/
We were able to get it stuffed back into place and all the fiddling with it did actually fix my leak, but I'm not touching it again unless I'm replacing it.

* Also, check out this excellent info Lee posted (and scroll down) on the petcock pieces:

Lee's pictures explain a lot.
The only thing I would question is calling the orifice in the check valve a snubber, it's role is to allow air back behind the check valve when the engine is turned off allowing the petcock to seat shutting off fuel flow.
I have been caught with the orifice blocking and the petcock staying on.

I hope that everyone doesn't start drilling the poprivits off of that side now,  nothing that you can service on that side.  T.P.

My valk would continue to run after I had shut the valve off, just streched that spring that holds  the ball down and it worked fine, probaly would work on the reserve also.
