After the axle is torqued, the "innards" of the pumpkin are alinged allowing for minimal wear. Obviously, the four nuts that bring shaft housing and the final drive together need to be tighten (torqued) to maintain this new position.  Smiley

That makes sense. Do you know what to torque the axle nut and the 4 on the shaft?

Thanks!   cooldude

The axle nut is 87 ft/lbs....Im not sure about the 4 on the shaft.

+1 Chris knows and the service manual puts the torque on the axle nut at 81 ft-lbs.

I got the "elusive #14" part. Did a kot of driving. But i got it. Got the fat lady back together.

New:

Wheel flange
Wheel dampers
Final driven gear/drive splines
Elusive part 14.

Lubed her up. New orings courtesy of Carolina Bike & Trike.
She runs like a champ!

Oh. And i picked up a new mustang seat during all the mix.

For everything listed above, it was about $500. (Not includin the seat of course)

You can see specifics in HDL's website.

Learned a lot about my bike throughout this repair. I recommend everyone check their splines for wear.

Dude... you ROCK!!

I am glad you got her fixed up, and I am glad, in retrospect, that  you got to get intimate with her.  Nothing makes a bike more YOURS than tearing into her, and fixing the PO's neglect, and making her right again.

RTFO!!

put 200 miles on the lady today. Noticed oil leaking from the final drive. I tore down the bike, naturally.....because Im getting really fast at doing it.

The oil seal on inside of pumpkin is shot. I do believe I ripped it with a screwdriver last week when reassembling. So anyone who might do this repair in the future....Dont use screwdrivers to stretch and fit oil seals. You'll lose that one every time. : (

Back to HDL. Back to the waiting on parts game. Im going to have a brand new bike soon, at this rate. I wonder if HDL could send me one of those?

Good luck using that Honda moly. It does not stay on the spline surfaces. I have switched over to the Guard Dog moly who now supports this site. My splines were dry after 3,000 miles. It all spun out. I will know more about this product in few months when I pull the rear tire for winter maintenance on the driveline.

Ive had similar results as above^^ using plain moly axle grease. I havent tried the actual "paste" since i put it all back together. i cant find the paste around town anywhere. Im just going to have to break down and order the actual paste. The grease REALLY spins out of the splines. Ahh well. I think this is a good thread. lots of good info there.

Having trouble with the grease spinning out of the spline area would point to a problem with the 'O'-rings not seating properly.

The reasons for the 'O'-rings are exactly that.

To keep the grease in there.

Been using the Honda Moly Paste for 75k on my standard and now almost 70k (last 30k have been mine) on the IS with no issues when maintained at regular intervals (8-12k).

Will probably change to Guard Dog or whatever the flavor of the month is when I finally run out but still have about half a tube left.

I can't say I've ever had it sling out quite like that before though. That almost looks like grease vs paste???

+1  Yep  Grin

As a matter of fact mixing the molly with Belray waterproof grease is all it needs between cleaning as long as the O-rings are in good shape. Including the hidden O-ring on the splines.

... and I do believe that Guard Dog is even better if not the best.  coolsmiley
